We wanted to create a functional gripping arm for amputees in developing countries. Our current prototype uses a two liter bottle as a socket for the residual limb. Since the bottle is a thermoplastic, it can be heated to conform to the amputee's residual limb. I tested this process by placing a wet sock over my arm, then inserting it into a bottle which I held over a fire. The plastic shrunk to fit my arm without burning my skin. The gripper is a bicycle brake which is held shut with rubber bands. The control cable for the break opens the gripper through shoulder movements aided by straps. The two parts are connected with PVC pipe which can be cut to the appropriate length.
