    VSIXER6
    VMEbus 6-channel Intelligent Serial I/O

    VSIXER6 provides six programmable serial communications channels, backed by an on-board processor to maximise system efficiency. The architecture is designed to offer designers a powerful and cost-effective building block for implementing systems employing advanced communications schemes such as X25.

    Based on three 8530 SCCs, four of VSIXER6's programmable channels can be configured for synchronous or asynchronous communications using either RS232 or RS485/422 protocols. Maximum achievable data rates are 921Kbaud and 57.6Kbaud respectively. These ports are brought out onto the front panel via two standard 50-way ribbon cable connectors conforming to the industry standard Signal Conditioning Bus scheme. When configured for RS232, each channel offers four handshake lines for modem control. In RS485 or RS422 mode, each channel offers bi- directional, tri-statable, data and output control pairs. The remaining two serial channels are suitable for RS232 communications and are made available for connection to a diagnostic console and printer via a 10-way header connector. A number of ready-built accessories are available for these I/O arrangements, including D-type connector panels and current- loop converters.

    Local intelligence is provided by an 80188 CPU (running at 12MHz) plus 256Kbytes EPROM and up to 512Kbytes RAM - 128Kbytes of which is dual-ported to both VMEbus and the optional STEbus interface. This local processing power can be used to perform computation-intensive tasks such as protocol conversion or data concentration. Two DMA channels are available for high-speed data transmission over the bus.

    The local STEbus interface, when fitted, allows designers to build systems employing both VMEbus and STEbus modules, allowing costs to be reduced for many applications. Two 16-bit latches which can be configured to cause interrupts when written to, allows simple control passing schemes between the busses to be implemented.
