A crossbow is a long-range weapon with an elastic launching device consisting of a bow-like assembly called a prod mounted horizontally on a main frame called a tiller, which is held in the same way as a long firearm's stock. Crossbows fire bolts or quarrels, which are arrow-like projectiles. A crossbowman or arbalist is someone who shoots a crossbow (after the arbalest, a European crossbow variant used during the 12th century). [1] Although crossbows and bows both use the same launch principle, the difference is that an archer must manually maintain a bow's draw by pitching the bowstring with fingers, pulling it back with arm and back muscles, and then holding that same form in order to aim (which is physically demanding and causes discomfort); whereas a crossbow uses a locking mechanism to maintain the draw, limiting the shooter's exertion to only pulling the string.
