The Meaning of the Image:

Our super sleuth jlbrian7 discovered a link to the Isotope Separator On Line-DEtector, aka ISOLDE, an experiment run at CERN from the 1960's through 2003. The link contains an image which is obviously in the same room, with the same beamline setup as our contest image. jlbrian7 also linked us to a history of the experiments run on ISOLDE. Great work! Hopefully CERN can use this information to identify the people and the particular experiement being run in the image!
