Kure World Create Day 2016

A Hackaday World Create Day gathering of humans with a passion for making things

Saturday, April 23, 2016 01:00 pm JST - 04:00 pm JST Kure, Hiroshima, Japan
Similar projects worth following

A gathering of people who like to create things. This event is not affiliated with any hackerspace, club, or even groups of friends. It is an attempt by one man(myself) to bring together like-minded folks and introduce them to the Hackaday community and hopefully get involved in the Hackaday prize.

The Goals:

1. To build a community of hackers in this area.

2. To develop a project for the Hackaday Prize design challenge.

NOTE: Change of venue
I had a long chat with the building manager for the civic center and we came to the conclusion that my home would be a better place for this event as we would have more tools and materials available and there won't be very many people attending anyway. But he was enthusiastic about setting up a similar event in the future with a lot more planning, advertising for attendance, and a clearer goal or agenda. Anyway, if you are going to attend this event you probably already know where my house is. If not, just ask.

Agenda:

  • 13:00: Self introductions, introduce the Hackaday community and prize
  • 13:20: Discuss some general types of projects that people are interested in. Then brainstorm some project ideas.
  • 14:00: Decide on a project, or multiple projects in teams, and start developing it.
  • 14:40: Conclude the event, clean up and share contact info.
  • Later: Write up and submit the project(s) to the Hackaday prize.

    • Better late than never

I know the event was more than one day ago, but I haven't had a chance to give an update.

It was a small but fun event. The attendees ranged from a 60 year old neuroscientist to a four year old kid and, well, my wife and I in between.

      Projects:

      • The kid wanted to make a star, so I cut a bunch of triangles out of some scrap wood and he set to work developing all sorts of things. He also wanted to make a robot, but we are still brainstorming that idea.
      • The other guy was trying to think of ways to help his ailing mother with her daily life. Although we came up with some ideas, they weren't really so technological.
      • I was thinking of ways to improve education and student life at the school where I work. I started working on one idea and it is almost complete, though it is hardly Hackaday Prize worthy.

Anyway, it was a day. In the future I hope to organize something with vastly more planning time and attendance.
