technolomaniac says:2 hours ago

so no no...that'll stay

Garrett Mace says:2 hours ago

Inventor is still around, right? :D

technolomaniac says:2 hours ago

BTW...I mentioned it, but now you can do non-modal commands like block select stuff

Garrett Mace says:2 hours ago

(I have an Inventor license too, I use it all the time)

technolomaniac says:2 hours ago

oh yah, inventor is alive and well

technolomaniac says:2 hours ago

ahh, nice

technolomaniac says:2 hours ago

inventor is a fun tool. I really enjoy it. long before my time at autodesk. :)

Garrett Mace says:2 hours ago

They did successfully move away from the command line in it, though of course you still can

charliex says:2 hours ago

i'd still like to see non blockng ulp's but i realise that might break a lot of things

Teuniz says:2 hours ago

I get a bit scary when I hear "server side"...

technolomaniac says:2 hours ago

I will get non-blocking ULPs if my life depends on it.

Jorge Garcia says:2 hours ago

I want to see non-blocking ulps that can accept mouse clicks. I'm with you Charlie

Teuniz says:2 hours ago

We will not use additions that require an internet connection.

Jorge Garcia says:2 hours ago

Matt is already convinced

davedarko says:2 hours ago

could the "beep ON | OFF" get an OFF default and a GUI checkbox? that'd be great ;)

Garrett Mace says:2 hours ago

charliex: I'd like to see some kind of live scripting ability. triggered events, stuff that can help you while you work.

charliex says:2 hours ago

yep exactly, sometimes i fill in a ulp settings and i miss the target and have to redo it, usually when laying out circular pattern leds ;)

Garrett Mace says:2 hours ago

I mean, the ability to create it. Give tools to the ULP community and it'll be awesome

technolomaniac says:2 hours ago

@Teuniz online / offline is interesting. I think the push is to of course handle licensing the autodesk way, but the desktop application will remain on the desktop until it makes sense to do otherwise.

technolomaniac says:2 hours ago

that licensning model will require that you connect to retrieve a license but then you can merrily go on your way and use the SW.

technolomaniac says:2 hours ago

and it will work in an offline mode with no data being pushed into the cloud

Garrett Mace says:2 hours ago

Sure....however, I will use whatever application is more reliable than the website we're using right now :)

technolomaniac says:2 hours ago

(unless you want to do it...which means we should add that capability)

Teuniz says:2 hours ago

So, in future, we can't use Eagle anymore without an internet connection???

technolomaniac says:2 hours ago

some stuff is just inherently better with a server side data model...like interfacing to mfg

Arsenijs says:2 hours ago

Teuniz, you should read what heš saying

technolomaniac says:2 hours ago

you can. but you will need to connect to get a license.

Garrett Mace says:2 hours ago

I'd be OK with a combo of online or dongle license. If I need to work without internet (which happens) then there is at least a chance I didn't lose my dongle

technolomaniac says:2 hours ago

after that, you can disconnect.

technolomaniac says:2 hours ago

is eagle on your computer now.

charliex says:2 hours ago

and download it ;)

Arsenijs says:2 hours ago

Internet connection will be required exactly once, from what I understand.

Garrett Mace says:2 hours ago

I have used Eagle at Burning Man to diagnose an art car controller PCB

technolomaniac says:2 hours ago

we'll handle the timeout between successive logins. we set this to two weeks for Fusion 360 and nobody complained

Garrett Mace says:2 hours ago

I don't get just one connection

technolomaniac says:2 hours ago

so it does require a successive login...but with a heartbeat of two weeks between requests for the token

charliex says:2 hours ago

online licensing is fine, but you just need the long time between checks or offline, since stuff like last month or so happens whenhalf the internet goes out

Garrett Mace says:2 hours ago

How about 52 weeks :D

technolomaniac says:2 hours ago

it's pretty lax. and if we need to make a case for a longer heartbeat, I can do it.

technolomaniac says:2 hours ago

:)

Teuniz says:2 hours ago

Using internet to buy a license is ok. Requiring an internet connection in order to use that license is not.

Jorge Garcia says:2 hours ago

You need to be able to hit the internet at least once every two weeks to keep the licensing system happy.

charliex says:2 hours ago

it helps the accountants sleep at night

Garrett Mace says:2 hours ago

Too many SaaS going belly up these days

Jorge Garcia says:2 hours ago

Adobe and Autodesk disagree

Jorge Garcia says:2 hours ago

;)

Garrett Mace says:2 hours ago

So do Gimp and Kicad I guess

Teuniz says:2 hours ago

I don't like it.

technolomaniac says:2 hours ago

@Teuniz sorry you feel that way, honestly. but the model of having your license shared across multiple machines requires something better than a license key or a license file.

Garrett Mace says:2 hours ago

I understand it though

I don't like it either

charliex says:2 hours ago

yeah otherwise you end up captured ina vm thats sharewd all over, or on a chinse render farm if youre rendering software say

jarek319 says:2 hours ago

??? I've had a "portable" install of eagle 7.x on my thumbdrive that I use almost every day on an airgapped computer and havent had issues...

Professor Fartsparkles says:2 hours ago

I asked it on the spreadsheet but I think that thing isn't really used so I'm gonna ask again here. Can we expect to see some improvement in regards to importing and handling of bitmap and vector graphics files? So far it´is really pain to get logos and what not on your board without something getting really weird.

Teuniz says:2 hours ago

Eagle has been able to survive all those years. No need to to change the license system.

Garrett Mace says:2 hours ago

That's valid if you don't have a free service tier, which has been Eagle's way of marginalizing pirates

technolomaniac says:2 hours ago

@Teuniz this is how much of the SW you already use is licensed. adobe. office. facebook. google products & services. free or not...this is a model that is replacing the license key.

technolomaniac says:2 hours ago

and it's a way to ensure that when a customer pays for something, that only they use it and it doesnt go rogue. I would love to shelve the idea but piracy is a huge thing and we are giving away free licenses to students, startups, hobbyists, etc. already.

Teuniz says:2 hours ago

Apart from Gmail, we don't use any of them.

Garrett Mace says:2 hours ago

Engineers are not quite the same as graphic designers. I have a Macbook but it's from 2011, I'm not replacing it because it still works great. We get anxious when we contemplate not being able to do work

charliex says:2 hours ago

if the licenseing system ever goes away, we'll just hack it out anyway ;)

Teuniz says:2 hours ago

I have to go, thanks for the chat.

technolomaniac says:2 hours ago

I agree it's a suboptimal biproduct of an unfair world. so if you can come up with a way to better protect software and fund the development of amazing tech, I promise you, I'm all ears.

Garrett Mace says:2 hours ago

I love Eagle and will continue to use it even after a licensing change

charliex says:2 hours ago

as in if the companuy goes bust

Garrett Mace says:2 hours ago

But will also learn how to use Kicad in case something happens

davedarko says:2 hours ago

I'd say try it first, if it really isn't going to work for you then I'm sure you won't be alone

technolomaniac says:2 hours ago

thanks @Garrett Mace ...and for the record, Hackday.io is cloud licensed.

technolomaniac says:2 hours ago

:)

technolomaniac says:2 hours ago

alright guys...have to run!

Garrett Mace says:2 hours ago

I know...and I'm glad I don't use it for work because it's been down multiple times today

technolomaniac says:2 hours ago

back online when I'm back at my desk...sorry about the ddos nonsense.

davedarko says:2 hours ago

LD

davedarko says:2 hours ago

:D

technolomaniac says:2 hours ago

haahaha...ok, yah. shit. bad example.

charliex says:2 hours ago

yeah its still laggy

Garrett Mace says:2 hours ago

Thanks!

Jorge Garcia says:2 hours ago

Later everyone

technolomaniac says:2 hours ago

:D

technolomaniac says:2 hours ago

thanks guys for coming!

charliex says:2 hours ago

yeah thanks guys, glad to see all the changes

Garrett Mace says:2 hours ago

DDOS a license server is not impossible

technolomaniac says:2 hours ago

and of course, you'll see me here just about any other time too.

alexanderlang1980 says:2 hours ago

Thanks for the chat - Laters

Benoit Rapidel says:2 hours ago

Bye

technolomaniac says:2 hours ago

so just ping me when you feel like it.

charliex says:2 hours ago

ok did you fix that bug in the rename of tracks yet?

technolomaniac says:2 hours ago

after all, I sort of frequent this community ;)

technolomaniac says:2 hours ago

ooh...which?

technolomaniac says:2 hours ago

and WHY? ...ooh WHY? can I open a dialog with the name of a net and not edit it?

charliex says:2 hours ago

name a track and the overlay doesnt change in 7.7 windows

technolomaniac says:2 hours ago

sorry...my one eagle rant for today.

technolomaniac says:2 hours ago

that one is going to be fixed.

charliex says:2 hours ago

cool

Jorge Garcia says:2 hours ago

Zoom in and out does it refresh?

technolomaniac says:2 hours ago

ahh, ok...let me look into that. it should be fixed.

technolomaniac says:2 hours ago

but Ill comfirm.

charliex says:2 hours ago

lemme check, im working in eagle at the moment

technolomaniac says:2 hours ago

@Jorge Garcia let's be sure that's in the build.

charliex says:2 hours ago

yeah zoom refreshes it, you can tell when i'm wokring in ealge and chatting, since half the time i type the comamnd in to the chat window, so its always, ra

Jorge Garcia says:2 hours ago

OK good, it's not bug. EAGLE only updates it when the screen needs to be redrawn like when you zoom in our out.

technolomaniac says:2 hours ago

but we can fix that charlie

Garrett Mace says:2 hours ago

I'm always waggling the scroll wheel in eagle. large cursor (the only sensible choice) pukes pixels all over layout until refreshed

technolomaniac says:2 hours ago

it should redraw on the exit

charliex says:2 hours ago

yeah it should redraw after a state change

Jorge Garcia says:2 hours ago

For sure, I'm aware of the pixel puke. It's a similar issue.

Garrett Mace says:2 hours ago

I was going to try it...whoops Eagle crashed on my first pan

Jorge Garcia says:2 hours ago

Garrett are you on a Mac?

charliex says:2 hours ago

like i can pan around and rename tracks, and they dont update til i zoom, but i might not zoom

Garrett Mace says:2 hours ago

Jorge: Yes

technolomaniac says:2 hours ago

mac bug. fixed in a later beta on the eagle webstie.

Garrett Mace says:2 hours ago

technolomaniac says:2 hours ago

it wasnt a full release, just that bug.

Garrett Mace says:2 hours ago

Awesome

Jorge Garcia says:2 hours ago

When you open EAGLE. Resize the window a little before you start working. That should avoid the crash.

technolomaniac says:2 hours ago

sorry - this is directed @charliex

Garrett Mace says:2 hours ago

Jorge I discovered that too, sometimes forget :)

charliex says:2 hours ago

ok

Jorge Garcia says:2 hours ago

For pixel puke zoom in and out too clear

charliex says:2 hours ago

preview window for find? :)

Jorge Garcia says:2 hours ago

??

Jorge Garcia says:2 hours ago

Could you elaborate Charlie

charliex says:2 hours ago

if i want to find a component just to check something, it might be on a different sheet, a little popup showing it instead of switching to the sheet

charliex says:2 hours ago

just spitballing, havent thought it through

charliex says:2 hours ago

if you're still around though i am curious about the choice that when you rename a net/signal that the default is only to do that segment vs all sheet/globally? is that a normal approach.

Garrett Mace says:2 hours ago

charlie: it makes sense to me. A lot of design can be connecting nets by name rather than dragging all the lines across the sheet. I find myself renaming stubs to something different rather than wanting to change every net attached to it

technolomaniac says:an hour ago

@charliex I think we need both options

charliex says:an hour ago

yeah i just wondered what people felt about it, it seems like an odd default since somethings i end up with a signal being split in half and not spotting it. mostly curious, its rare to get direct input so i figured i'd ask

technolomaniac says:an hour ago

we should prompt you to do that locally if the user wants it

technolomaniac says:an hour ago

I think making big changes across sheets is scary without a prompt to scope the change

Garrett Mace says:an hour ago

fat nets with signal names embedded

charliex says:an hour ago

yeah its the default i'm curious about, personally i'd rather have the default all versus the current segment only

charliex says:an hour ago

but i get it, we all like different stuff, thats software for ya

Garrett Mace says:an hour ago

Regarding the licensing stuff I want to make sure you understand...we get it...Autodesk is on board with putting in the dev hours to make these improvements, but they need to see a return. It's going to be OK, I'll keep using Eagle and any users you lose will probably be replaced by new ones as Eagle gets more popular. I have a small personal dislike of too many things going Cloud, but still, I get it and appreciate the work you're doing :)

charliex says:an hour ago

yeah i still use my comfile board occasionally still ;)

Garrett Mace says:an hour ago

Whoa there's a blast from the past. I haven't even kept up with them

charliex says:an hour ago

yeah i bought a bunch of them from you way back , i think around 07 maybe

Garrett Mace says:an hour ago

They are a good example of something that just gets it done. Not worrying so much about raw performance

charliex says:an hour ago

yeah they were great, also good for teaching people with the ladder logic

charliex says:an hour ago

ok thanks for the chat, time to go back to work...

todbot says:an hour ago

++ what Garrett said. I'm pleased to see all the effort Autodesk has put into the community. I too have been burned several times by cloud-connected products going non-functional when the company producing it goes away or stops caring. But I understand the desire to have connected products. And I'm eager to move to something significantly better than Eagle v6.6.0 :-)
