Welcome Wayne!

Atom Wolf says:5 hours ago

Hi Wayne!

Shulie Tornel says:5 hours ago

Thanks for coming! :)

Piotr Esden-Tempski says:5 hours ago

Wayne! Welcome! :)

Welcome Wayne!

Anool Mahidharia says:5 hours ago

Yo @Wayne Stambaugh

@Wayne Stambaugh, just a quick housekeeping here

Anool Mahidharia says:5 hours ago

a big Hi-5 for all the work you and the team put's in on KiCAD

we have a list of Qs here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/14rWpk5Mkoyq-CCKAN_x-Gm6t4dDOoInF4hb_LLe4G_8/edit#gid=0

Wayne has also shared a presentation with us about upcoming stuff: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B8ng6CtJ1Hh6NU11UTRrbzZBYjg/view?usp=sharing

Chris Gammell says:5 hours ago

I just move too fast for any chat to keep up with me

oshpark says:5 hours ago

Hooray for KiCad! We're excited to hear from you, Wayne!

Anool Mahidharia says:5 hours ago

whoa, al the big guys are here

Wayne Stambaugh says:5 hours ago

I know it's laggy when I'm typing faster that it's displaying characters. ;)

scott.shawcroft says:5 hours ago

The features of V5 look really awesome!

Benchoff says:5 hours ago

oh cool the gang's all here

hey everyone is here! awesome!

scott.shawcroft says:5 hours ago

I'm excited to see the PCB rendering unified to opengl

riktw says:5 hours ago

Huh, that presentation answered most of my questions.

Anool Mahidharia says:5 hours ago

+1, roadmap looks awesome

Oliver Launchbury-Clark says:5 hours ago

@Sophi Kravitz Just to check, do you want us to put questions directly into that google sheet or to ask here then post in the sheet as an archive?

Wayne Stambaugh says:5 hours ago

I think V5 will be a great release. A lot of new features and it lays ground work for future features with the schematic and symbol library file formats.

Garrett Mace says:5 hours ago

Can anyone remind me whether KiCAD has a design-time CLI? As in, I can move a part to coordinate 22.5, 10.1?

Wayne Stambaugh says:5 hours ago

Post your questions here. I'll try to answer the questions in the doc later.

Atom Wolf says:5 hours ago

Garrett, you can do that but it isn't really a CLI.

Chris Gammell says:5 hours ago

Yes, you can edit the part and put in coodinates directly

Chris Gammell says:5 hours ago

yeah, it's a part edit thing

Chris Gammell says:5 hours ago

maybe could do with python though?

Garrett Mace says:5 hours ago

Radial and relative coordinates?

Wayne Stambaugh says:5 hours ago

KiCad does not have a CLI interface at this time. It has been discussed and it's something we would like to implement at some point but lack of manpower is holding back at the moment.

Garrett Mace says:5 hours ago

Thanks :)

scott.shawcroft says:5 hours ago

There is relative move as well. I haven't seen radial

LazyHD says:5 hours ago

@Wayne Stambaugh any plans for mechanical DRC in kicad such as height restrictions. The footprint can have a maximum height field and in pcbnew check it against a DRC value.

Garrett Mace says:5 hours ago

Regarding that manpower issue. I've noticed that Bountysource mirrors issues for KiCAD but no bounties have been paid out. How do we formalize getting payment out there for specific features?

Wayne Stambaugh says:5 hours ago

The only radial placement I'm aware of is in the array tool.

riktw says:5 hours ago

I looked at the V5 items, which would solve a lot of my issues, is there any rough idea on a release or beta release for that?

Atom Wolf says:5 hours ago

Garrett, I know you can donate money to CERN for KiCad, but AFAIK you can't earmark it for a feature.

Chris Gammell says:5 hours ago

Wayne, could you discuss the developer/project side thoughts about beginners vs expert tools? There are often pro features that are interesting but there are always new people coming in and trying to learn the tool and are baffled by the interface.

Wayne Stambaugh says:5 hours ago

Payment for specific features has been handled via donations through CERN. That's how the P&S router work was funded. I suspect we could fund other features that way.

Wayne Stambaugh says:5 hours ago

The V5 pre-release was supposed to be ready before FOSDEM. That's not going to happen but hopefully soon there after.

Garrett Mace says:5 hours ago

Bountysource could be a platform to get new developers on board to tweak the 1001 little bugs you can't chase down because you're doing the big stuff

lukasz.iwaszkiewicz says:5 hours ago

Again, the router is the reason I switched from Eagle. Are there plans for further improvements of the router?

Piotr Esden-Tempski says:5 hours ago

Here is the Cern donation link for those interested: https://giving.web.cern.ch/civicrm/contribute/transact?reset=1&id=6

riktw says:5 hours ago

FOSDEM is in brussels I just saw, that's very drivable. I'llkeep that it mind.

LazyHD says:5 hours ago

is the development now using git ?

Garrett Mace says:5 hours ago

Thanks Piotr, that's helpful and I will donate. However I'm also interested in attracting more casual developers to come in and help with the effort, maybe they'll get hooked and contribute even more. Grow the size of the dev team. I'm not a software dev or I would help, but I can donate to developers and provide feedback

Wayne Stambaugh says:5 hours ago

KiCad has always tried to provide features that a beginner can use without alienating advanced users. Hopefully we can continue to walk that fine line between usability and power.

Atom Wolf says:5 hours ago

LazyHD, yes.

Piotr Esden-Tempski says:5 hours ago

@Wayne what is the status of your schematic editor backend changes? Is that part of the FOSDEM release timeline?

Wayne Stambaugh says:5 hours ago

Hopefully some of you can make it the EDA dev room for the KiCad talk on Sunday. Make sure you get there early because it has been standing room only the first two years. Apparently everyone wants to hear me talk. I'm not why. :)

Anool Mahidharia says:5 hours ago

PCB layout from a nightly build doesn't open in Stable. Is it just me or is there a known issue. The nightly build adds "Diff Pair Clearance" . Removing instances of those solves the problem. Was wondering if it's just me or a known issue.

Oliver Launchbury-Clark says:5 hours ago

In terms of getting new developers in, would a person who's only had minimal exposure to C++ trying to learn through basic bug fixing be useful? Or would it perhaps end up putting more of a strain on the core developer group chasing around after such a person with minimal experience?

Kuldeep Singh Dhaka says:5 hours ago

designing usable + powerful ui is very hard. will still keeping current user happy. its a landmine. one wrong decision, and >boom< people will have hard time adapting.

Kuldeep Singh Dhaka says:5 hours ago

*while

Piotr Esden-Tempski says:5 hours ago

@Wayne I hope you will be recorded. Better quality than before. I enjoyed all your talks. Do not sell yourself short. :)

Wayne Stambaugh says:5 hours ago

Yes, the schematic I/O plugin, symbol library table, and new schematic and symbol library file formats are slated to be part of the V5 release. I have a bunch of work complete on my system that I'm still getting ready to push.

Garrett Mace says:5 hours ago

Kuldeep without trying to be mean, every user steps on that landmine when they open KiCAD. This isn't rare in the general CAD community though

scott.shawcroft says:5 hours ago

Has the Autodesk Eagle subscription announcement changed interest in KiCad at all?

Kuldeep Singh Dhaka says:5 hours ago

*designing usable + powerful ui while considering begineer learning curve

Tim says:5 hours ago

@Wayne Stambaugh, do you have any advice for people who would like to begin contributing to development? Are there any familiarization docs made for developers new to the project?

Wayne Stambaugh says:5 hours ago

Kicad tries to provide a simple interface for basic tools but also provide hot keys and scripting for power users. It's impossible to make everyone happy. My goal is to shoot for as large an audience as possible.

LazyHD says:5 hours ago

@Wayne a silly question. but is there a real reason why the windows version have more icons/ui in the menus (right click for example) than the one for linux ?

Chris Gammell says:5 hours ago

Love me some hot keys

Piotr Esden-Tempski says:5 hours ago

Adding to @scott.shawcroft question, do you see traffic spike, since the Eagle announcement? :)

LazyHD says:5 hours ago

@Tim http://kicad-pcb.org/contribute/developers/

Wayne Stambaugh says:5 hours ago

There is a lot of good information for contributing to kicad on the website contribute section. It's also helpful to join the dev mailing list on launchpad.

Garrett Mace says:5 hours ago

UI is fun. Some inconsistencies discovered in first day...my keyboard doesn't have a down-right key (found out that was End). And trying to edit layer colors does nothing unless you think to try middle clicking on the color icon.

Piotr Esden-Tempski says:5 hours ago

I second the dev mailinglist. It is a fascinating read, and helps learning about how the project ticks. :)

Wayne Stambaugh says:5 hours ago

The icons on linux are somewhat dependent on your WM and the build configuration (they can be turn off or on during build config). On windows, they are always on. On OSX, they are always off.

Atom Wolf says:5 hours ago

Garrett, the end key thing is just macOS...https://www.danrodney.com/mac

Wayne Stambaugh says:5 hours ago

UI inconsistencies tend to be platform related. It's really difficult to get consistent behavior between win, linux, and osx. Even different WMs on linux can wreak havoc on that.

Atom Wolf says:5 hours ago

(The color thing is definitely nutty, though.)

Garrett Mace says:5 hours ago

Adam: Yeah...I'm still used to seeing a small box like [End] rather than some symbol

Adam Vadala-Roth says:5 hours ago

hello hello!

Wayne Stambaugh says:5 hours ago

Which color thing?

Chris Gammell says:5 hours ago

The middle-click layer color change, I believe they're talking about

Garrett Mace says:5 hours ago

Once you know about a middle click thing, then you know. But every time you're just going to think "Why?" right

Adam Vadala-Roth says:5 hours ago

speaking of colors, it would be nice to change the colors of schematic sheets symbols just lijke Altium

Piotr Esden-Tempski says:5 hours ago

If anyone here is a Mac OS user, there are regular shoutouts on the Kicad Freenode IRC channel asking to test things.

Chris Gammell says:5 hours ago

That's a good IRC! Off topic once in a while, but good

Garrett Mace says:5 hours ago

As a Mac OS user, thankfully I even have a middle click mouse :)

Wayne Stambaugh says:5 hours ago

I typically don't change colors much. I find the defaults tend to work best except for the GAL canvases in pcbnew.

Adam Vadala-Roth says:5 hours ago

I agree with you there, I tried changing the colors to altium ones and it just felt weird.

Piotr Esden-Tempski says:5 hours ago

@Adam Vadala-Roth It would be great if we could also save the color theme in a file. I think it is currently missing in KiCad (for both schematic and pcb layout)

Adam Vadala-Roth says:5 hours ago

indeed

scott.shawcroft says:5 hours ago

@Piotr Esden-Tempski I'm on mac

Chris Gammell says:5 hours ago

We're literally bikeshedding right now, discussing colors :-)

LazyHD says:5 hours ago

+1 @Piotr

Garrett Mace says:5 hours ago

I was trying to change the grid color because the dots were fading in and out and shimmering in moire patterns

Chris Gammell says:5 hours ago

@Wayne Stambaugh, what do you see missing from current versions that you're most excited about?

Wayne Stambaugh says:5 hours ago

We have a few places where saving settings (not just color) need to implemented. It's one of those things that tends to fall through the cracks until someone steps up and implements it.

Tim says:5 hours ago

I'll have to join the mailing list, then. :) Has there been any discussion on adding a parameterized footprint editor?

LazyHD says:5 hours ago

@Wayne Stambaugh any plans for a library builder such as pcb library expert or orcad library builder ?

Garrett Mace says:5 hours ago

Color is part of function when you have to stare at something for 8 hours straight, and use the information you're seeing to make decisions

Wayne Stambaugh says:5 hours ago

I would really like us to get pin/gate swapping, groups (snipped) in pcbnew, and the ability to remap symbol pins implements. A lot of that is slated for version 6 release.

Atom Wolf says:5 hours ago

I'm pretty excited by Chris's error message audit!

Piotr Esden-Tempski says:5 hours ago

@Wayne Stambaugh I am excited to see the discusson about the design reuse on the Dev mailinglist. I think this could also lead to PCB panelization capability inside KiCad. Do you have any opinions about it to share?

Scott G says:5 hours ago

@Tim The online generators like http://kicad.rohrbacher.net/quickmod.php are still working, right?

Wayne Stambaugh says:5 hours ago

We are planning to improve library tools. The symbol library editor will probably done first. There is some good work been done with a tree view of libraries and symbols that really makes editing symbol libraries far better than our current design.

Piotr Esden-Tempski says:5 hours ago

I am aware that one can already do pcb panelization using "append pcb" function. But it is not a 100% solution.

LazyHD says:5 hours ago

actually pcb library expert supports kicad but it doesn't run on linux.

Adam Vadala-Roth says:5 hours ago

I'd like the ability to open multiple projects and to copy and paste schematic sections as well as PCB sections between projects, agian just like Altium

Adam Vadala-Roth says:5 hours ago

as far as design reuse goes that is

LazyHD says:5 hours ago

I do this by copying the ascii text (not very friendly but works for me)

Piotr Esden-Tempski says:5 hours ago

@Adam Vadala-Roth If you open the schematic on it's own you can copy and paste already. (copy block) unless I miss something.

Adam Vadala-Roth says:5 hours ago

right now I've been copying the entire sheet file to a new project and renaming it. Oh @Piotr Esden-Tempski that's good to know

Wayne Stambaugh says:5 hours ago

I like the group concept but it needs be discussed. I doubt it will be mature enough to make it into the V5 release. I'm also less interested in making kicad a useful panelization tool. If the group code makes life easier for panelization, that's fine but the end goal is reuse.

Kuldeep Singh Dhaka says:5 hours ago

when ever i modify my kicad project, my .pro file get a updated with a date, when using git, it a bit of pain. (though gitignore can do the trick) but still is the date require?

Garrett Mace says:5 hours ago

I also think it's OK to leave panelization for later. It's not typically done in the design tool anyway

Kuldeep Singh Dhaka says:5 hours ago

*the latest date

Scott G says:5 hours ago

@LazyHD the number of times that the human-editable text format of pcbnew has saved me.... It's quite useful to be able to use search-replace in a text editor.

Wayne Stambaugh says:5 hours ago

Copy and paste has been one of kicad's weaknesses. Hopefully we will address some of that in the V6 release.

Chris Gammell says:5 hours ago

@Wayne Stambaugh What about better graphical tools for building out footprints? Specifically arbitrary and/or vector shapes? The footprint shapes that chip makers keep coming up with are wonky and the tool can't always handle it.

Adam Vadala-Roth says:5 hours ago

yeah I really like the human readable files, though I have not exploited this benefit yet, I just think all files should be this way

LazyHD says:5 hours ago

@Scott G true that

Audi McAvoy says:5 hours ago

I typically leave panelization to the board house anyway.

Adam Vadala-Roth says:5 hours ago

yeah I am so with @Chris Gammell on that arbitrary shapes or being able to draw copper pours or rather solid filled vectors in the footprint editor would be a huge plus

scott.shawcroft says:5 hours ago

Anybody working on GitHub rendering kicad files? It'd be awesome to see the files "in repo"

Garrett Mace says:5 hours ago

Chris: do you know if the framework itself can handle arbitrary pad shapes? is the only holdup the ability to edit them?

Adam Vadala-Roth says:5 hours ago

@scott.shawcroft I love that idea!

Chris Gammell says:5 hours ago

@scott.shawcroft I like that too, but think that's good for a community project vs the core devs

Chris Gammell says:5 hours ago

Or hell, even for the GitHub team to do

Wayne Stambaugh says:5 hours ago

@Kuldeep Singh Dhaka, I'm not sure if we need to update the .pro file date. It's something we could take a look at. We do try to make life easier for users who use version control software.

scott.shawcroft says:5 hours ago

Agreed! I'll do it at some point when CircuitPython stuff slows down a bit

Chris Gammell says:5 hours ago

I pinged someone at GitHub after they did that for STLs, but no response

Piotr Esden-Tempski says:5 hours ago

@scott.shawcroft I am dreaming of that since I started using GitHub to host any PCB designs. Visual diff and everything. :)

Wayne Stambaugh says:4 hours ago

We don't support arbitrary pad shapes yet. That is schedule for V6.

Kuldeep Singh Dhaka says:4 hours ago

Esden me too. i dream like a capacitor moved from one position to another (marked as transparent). just like the text diff

scott.shawcroft says:4 hours ago

@Piotr Esden-Tempski I'm interested too. Should we create a bug somewhere to colaborate on it?

Oliver Launchbury-Clark says:4 hours ago

Bit of a long term one, do you see version control interfaces being brought into kicad. Also do you think there may be scope to add utilities such as diff viewing and merging?

Atom Wolf says:4 hours ago

I worked a little with the folks at oshpark to get KiCad uploads working. I'd see if they're willing/able to help out, @scott.shawcroft

Wayne Stambaugh says:4 hours ago

A one point someone did a visual diff comparison between board layouts. It was rather slick but I cannot remember where I saw it. I'm not even sure it worked with kicad files. It may have worked directly with gerber files.

Adam Vadala-Roth says:4 hours ago

I hear V6 alot when are V6 features going to be in the nightly?

Garrett Mace says:4 hours ago

http://www.evilmadscientist.com/2011/improving-open-source-hardware-visual-diffs/

Atom Wolf says:4 hours ago

I know we talked about http://www.evilmadscientist.com/2011/improving-open-source-hardware-visual-diffs/ on the dev mailing list.

scott.shawcroft says:4 hours ago

@Atom Wolf wheres a good place to keep track of the task? I might be able to help out too

Piotr Esden-Tempski says:4 hours ago

@scott.shawcroft Definitely interested to be part of the discussion at least. :)

Atom Wolf says:4 hours ago

I don't know enough about how Github supports previews to say. Investigate that, I think.

Piotr Esden-Tempski says:4 hours ago

they are plugins as far as I understand. Needs to be implemented in javascript as far as I understand.

scott.shawcroft says:4 hours ago

Do we just need a launchpad bug to. track it?

Wayne Stambaugh says:4 hours ago

After the V5 stable branch is created, then work will start on V6. Initially most of the devs will be busy getting the V5 release stable. Once V5 stable is released, the V6 development should move at it's normal pace.

Adam Vadala-Roth says:4 hours ago

cool, so are V5 features being pushed to the nightly now?

Piotr Esden-Tempski says:4 hours ago

@Wayne Stambaugh What release frequency are you targetting. (for mayor releases like V4 V5 V6)

Adam Vadala-Roth says:4 hours ago

that's a better question @Piotr Esden-Tempski

Oliver Launchbury-Clark says:4 hours ago

It seems that the kicad development rate has really ramped up recently. With a large gap between v3 and v4. now v5 is on the way in rapid succession. Other then the CERN involvement is there any other reasons behind this rapid rise in releases?

Garrett Mace says:4 hours ago

(not very related to current discussion) I think every EE has dreamed of making their own PCB CAD software, it'll be perfect...until you realize that even Fritzing is way ahead of you

Piotr Esden-Tempski says:4 hours ago

@Adam Vadala-Roth The nightly builds contain a lot of what Wayne is talking about. Some people even use it for production. (I needed roundrect pads so I generate my gerber files with nightly as we speak) :)

zakqwy says:4 hours ago

doing a bit of chat catch-up.. @Atom Wolf, thanks for helping oshpark get kicad uploads working, it's a terrific feature!

Wayne Stambaugh says:4 hours ago

All but a few. I'm about to push the schematic I/O plugin followed quickly by the symbol library table (same as current footprint library table except for symbols), and then the new schematic and symbol library file formats. The symbol library editor improvements, stitching via support, and connection algorithm fixes are still not pushed yet.

Adam Vadala-Roth says:4 hours ago

yeah Ive been using nightly exclusively since mid september @Piotr Esden-Tempski

Garrett Mace says:4 hours ago

So I'm not ever going to try to make my own PCB CAD :) any urges in that direction will go towards KiCAD

Wayne Stambaugh says:4 hours ago

There are still a few P&S router improvements that haven't made it into the nightly builds.

steelman says:4 hours ago

@Wayne Stambaugh Is there a (plan for) convenient way of putting a circuit onto a breadboard/prototyping pcb? For example you place components on a pcb, connect traces with jumpers and print a list of component locations with coordinates like: R6 B4-D4, IC2 D8-H16, J2 A5-C12 and so on.

Adam Vadala-Roth says:4 hours ago

like what ?

Chris Gammell says:4 hours ago

Yeah, there is so much baseline functionality that needs to be perfect before it can have the good stuff on top @Garrett Mace

Adam Vadala-Roth says:4 hours ago

I love the P&S router

Piotr Esden-Tempski says:4 hours ago

@Adam Vadala-Roth +1

Anool Mahidharia says:4 hours ago

P+S has saved my day more than once

Anool Mahidharia says:4 hours ago

especially when I'm down to finishing off the last couple of traces

Chris Gammell says:4 hours ago

@steelman, you mean similar to Fritzing capabilities?

Wayne Stambaugh says:4 hours ago

@steelman I'm not sure exactly what you mean by putting a circuit onto a breadboard/prototyping pcb.

Garrett Mace says:4 hours ago

I would be fine if KiCAD did not know a breadboard exists

Benchoff says:4 hours ago

oh god what are we talking about now?

Adam Vadala-Roth says:4 hours ago

I think he wants to work with the PCB only and have it genearte a bom from manually placing components and drawing traces between them instead of using a schamtic

Wayne Stambaugh says:4 hours ago

The P&S router diff pair routing is being improved the collision mode was just made more like the legacy router.

Adam Vadala-Roth says:4 hours ago

but Fritzing already does that

Garrett Mace says:4 hours ago

KitZING

Adam Vadala-Roth says:4 hours ago

and KiCAD is aiming to be a pro design suite

Garrett Mace says:4 hours ago

Fritzing is for EDU

Adam Vadala-Roth says:4 hours ago

I agree

Garrett Mace says:4 hours ago

It does things that CAD tools can't, and shouldn't

Piotr Esden-Tempski says:4 hours ago

@Wayne Stambaugh are you aware of anything that is currently the biggest obstacle for KiCad growth? Meaning both, developer (developer time available) and userbase?

Kuldeep Singh Dhaka says:4 hours ago

both of the softwares serve it distinct niche.

Wayne Stambaugh says:4 hours ago

I don't know that KiCad will ever support place and route without a schematic. KiCad is always going to be aimed at the professional pcb designer with as much beginner pcb designer help as can reasonably be provided. That is sort of the project goal.

Tim says:4 hours ago

Are the new library formats all S-expression based? If so, how long should we expect the old library formats to be supported?

Adam Vadala-Roth says:4 hours ago

and will there be support to automatically convert and upgrade libraries to the new format?

Wayne Stambaugh says:4 hours ago

@Piotr Esden-Tempski I think the biggest obstacle is finding developers who are both strong c++ coders that have a lot of experience with pcb layout experience. It's easy to find folks with one or the other but much less so to find both so I suspect that we will never have the manpower we would like to have.

Chris Gammell says:4 hours ago

Step one: find more C++ coders who are on Hackaday.io making stuff

Garrett Mace says:4 hours ago

What about teaching PCB layout experts how to write functional specifications and UI mockups?

Piotr Esden-Tempski says:4 hours ago

@Wayne Stambaugh As far as I understand you also have a day job. Would you ever consider becoming full time maintainer/developer of KiCad if that is financially possible?

Wayne Stambaugh says:4 hours ago

@Tim the new schematic file formats will be s-expression just like the board file formats. The legacy formats will be supported forever just like the legacy board file formats. At some point, you just wont be able to save the legacy schematic formats.

Chris Gammell says:4 hours ago

@Garrett Mace, let's not get crazy now. There are more software people than hardware too.

Chris Gammell says:4 hours ago

@Garrett Mace, also ew

Garrett Mace says:4 hours ago

It's easier than learning how to write C++ that won't get you mocked

scott.shawcroft says:4 hours ago

k, I just emailed GitHub about tips on adding file rendering support.

Piotr Esden-Tempski says:4 hours ago

@scott.shawcroft Awesome, keep us in the loop if you get a response. :)

scott.shawcroft says:4 hours ago

kk

Wayne Stambaugh says:4 hours ago

@Piotr Esden-Tempski I've been asked that question quite a few time. If someone was willing to pay me a competitive salary and compensation to what I am currently making, absolutely I would consider becoming a full time developer/maintainer for KiCad. I enjoy working on KiCad and wish I had more time to contribute to the project.

Chris Gammell says:4 hours ago

@Wayne Stambaugh what is the relationship with CERN like at the moment?

Garrett Mace says:4 hours ago

I think the best influence on a project is a continual influx of new users. Y
