Kick off the 2018 season with us at ThoughtWorks on Wednesday, January 24th for a new installment of Hackaday MakeIt NYC! We're excited to feature talks by two brilliant makers:

Jonah Brucker-Cohen, Ph.D., is an award winning researcher, artist, and writer. He is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Journalism and Media Studies at Lehman College / CUNY in the Bronx. He received his Ph.D. in the Disruptive Design Team of the Electronic and Electrical Engineering Department of Trinity College Dublin. His work focuses on the theme of “Deconstructing Networks” and includes over 100 creative projects that critically challenge and subvert accepted perceptions of network interaction and experience. His artwork has been exhibited and showcased at venues such as SFMOMA, Canadian Museum of Contemporary Art, MOMA, ICA London, Whitney Museum of American Art, Palais du Tokyo, Tate Modern, Ars Electronica, Transmediale, and more. His project, “Bumplist”, is included in the permanent collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art. His writing has appeared in publications such as WIRED, Make, Gizmodo, Neural and more. Jonah will discuss his projects and work in the theme of “Critical Networked Experience” that challenge and subvert accepted notions of network interaction and socialization. Some projects he will discuss include “BumpList”, an email community for the determined, “Killer Route” a GPS navigation system that integrates live crime data, “WSSID” a hacked wireless router that broadcasts the weather, “ContactRot” an iPhone app that challenges our reliance on the cloud, “Alerting Infrastructure!”, a website hit counter that destroys a building, “Wifi-Hog” a portable system for regaining control of public wireless networks and he will also discuss his "Scrapyard Challenge" hardware hacking workshops that he has been running since 2003. He will conclude his talk with a live demo and explanation of “Lively” and “Healing Destinations", two web and mobile based projects that allow for collaborative interaction from cellphones on a shared public screen.

Noah Feehan is a full-stack charlatan, working with whatever software and hardware will best fit the occasion. His work often examines the critical and ethical dimensions of emerging technology, using provocative prototypes to show how life might be if technology corporations valued, for example, customer trust over data-based revenues. Currently Noah is building weft.rocks, a consumer-electronics company, alongside the open source WEFT project. He also consults/advises on special projects with a mix of corporate and artist clients.

Noah will talk about the WEFT UI Board, which lets people start experimenting with a new haptic phenomenon - electrovibration. Electrovibration lets you dynamically change the apparent texture of a flat surface(!). He will talk about the technology's strengths and limitations, and outline some potential applications that he'd especially like users to try.
