Hi Tim McMahon, thanks for the tip. There's a lot of Chinese modules out there, albeit without FCC approval. These modules have several miles range, and are likely to he heard. For commercial applications, like next phase of Vinduino, only FCC approved modules will do. I have not received the Link-Labs evaluation boards yet (http://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/LL-RLP-20-USB-A/1616-1005-ND/5762385), but so far they have been very supportive and even shared Arduino libraries: https://github.com/LinkLabs/linklabs-arduino
It'd be nice to see companies like RisingHF get FCC approval for their modules using Semtech and STMicro components. sx1276 pops up on Github a bit (but no FCC approval): https://github.com/Lora-net/LoRaMac-node
Link-Labs LL-RLP-20 might be the way to go for now before everything changes again in 6 months:
Have you tried RHF76-052 sx1276/STM32 LoRa modules by RisingHF (aka RUIXING)? I used one recently for a challenge at work. It was able to support sending audio, albeit slow. No idea about FCC...

Microchip's RN2903 is another module with FCC approval to consider:

Sigfox, Semtech, STMicro, Microchip all seem to be trying to get a piece of the LPWAN/LoRa pie.
