Energy harvesting contest
Clovis Fritzen wrote 03/15/2016 at 03:14 • 2 pointsSince (the fuzzy concept of) ioT is all around, I would like to see some official competition/contest (underground goes as well) on uW and mW energy harvesting for things like BLE and WiFi devices/projects. What do you guys think about the idea?

Almost any energy projects which are less than that needed to power a modern house, say approx. 10,000 kw, would not garner any real attention from producers or users. This just seems to be the lower threshold of interest.

I do agree with that, because it is indeed how things work out there. Yet what I do not understant is why, given that ioT run on mW ranges, not more attention is given to the subject. I mean, imagene a world full of so-said "self-powered" gadgets around us: they are of-course not self-powered but they do harvest energy from the surroundings.

I think it's a very important field that is very much overlooked in the "maker" community at large. Especially the Arduino crowd can't seemingly be bothered to think about low power. Sitting in a loop is not the way to do it.
Personally I'm very interested in energy harvesting and low power systems in general, I just don't know if you'll be able to get any traction about it in this community.

Thanks for the reply!. Yep, the Arduino community overlooks it because they simply cannot understand its power and usefullness; once the 27-yr-old Arduino user (and full time musician/artist) figures they can run their gadgets at a single indoor solar cell by making wiser use of deep-sleep and other fine techniques, they will be overwhelmed
