Portable air tank
ActualDragon wrote 05/14/2017 at 17:57 • 0 pointsHey everyone, I need a portable air tank for #Air Compressed Nerf Gun, you know, like a paintball tank? I'm trying to make it as cheap as possible, using pipe and materials from around the house. all i need is the tank, and i've only spent like $3 for the hose. The plan is to refill a old green portable propane tank with air. I know I'm crazy and am going to kill myself, and don't need any reminders. Before I try it, has anyone done this before?

USED A GREEN FREON TANK FOR AIR TANK TO INFLATE TIRES. GREAT RESULTS

PVC with air has traditionally been a nono. The air compresses so stores energy which can fling shattered PVC. Please be super careful. What about one of those little hand held pump-up sprayers? https://www.amazon.com/Chapin-20000-Fertilizer-Herbicides-Pesticides/dp/B000E28UQU/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1495644913&sr=8-2&keywords=1+gallon+sprayer (I haven't used this brand, I have this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/30-SECONDS-Outdoor-Cleaner-Sprayer-20076-w-Anti-clog-Filter-1-Gallon-/391600902166?hash=item5b2d3b9016:g:UWYAAOSwal5YCPyR) I'd be extremely cautious about filling either with anything but their included pump.

i got the caps, and if i shatter the pvc, :). besides, the soda bottles didn't work. i need more psi. i got schedule 40 5'' pvc, so that's not going ANYWHERE. it's heavy, but whatever.

MY "POTATO GUN" HAS A 4" X 12" AIR MAGAZINE WITH A 48" X 2" BARREL HAVE USED HAIR SPRAY, THEN CONVERTED TO AIR. ABT 40 PSI PUTS MY ANTENNAS UP IN TREES W/ EASE.

Hey man. I'm not gonna try and convince you not to do this. But when you do, could you livestream on youtube?
That'll be viral video dynamite.

im going to be using schedule 40 1" pvc as an air tank for an upcoming build of the Fallout 4 Syringer. it is rated to 450 psi, and i'll be slipping it into a steel pipe in case of it breaking during testing. when i start on it, follow it as i'll be posting logs on the testing, and videos if i ever find my camera.

Yup, soda bottles are good pressure vessels, but please use less than 7 bars, I had one burst at 11 bar right next to my face, felt like a huge punch. Small ones (half liter) are more robust than the big ones

Yes, there are thin walled non return bottles that have a bust pressure more near the 10 bar side of things. I'd guess that bottles with weird shapes may be even more fragile. But who would use one of these?

May be you should think about what pressure you want to work with first.
Soda bottles are a good and cheap way of doing this. Deposit bottles are generally stronger than non return ones.
They should withstand a pressure of about 15 to 20 bar right before bursting. So using up to 10 bar should be fine. Assuming you have a source of high pressure air (e.g. a pump for a air based bike spring) you can test the burst pressure by filling the bottle with water, putting them into a rugged card broad box and then increase the pressure til it bursts. Be aware that the pressure the bottle can withstand long term is lower than the burst pressure.
They should withstand normal compressors and bike pumps. But make sure they do not have scratches or dents. You may consider putting something around them to protect them from sharp and pointy objects. Think of them as high pressure children's balloons with a much louder popping sound.
Soda bottles practically do not leak assuming the stuff you hooked up to it is air tight. They are used for Airzound bike horns (both stock and diy extended volume tanks) and can hold pressure for weeks.

Do not kill yourself. You are a good person hhhhhhhh

i guess you learn something new every day :)

yeah, but won't the bottle leak? i figured no way in hell a propane tank would leak

I'm pretty sure your duct tape holding the valve to the pipe will leak more ;)
Are you sure? yes | no
well yeah, but the air's leaving anyways. the tank isn't supposed to. especially if you fill it the night before. plus, the valve is wedged in there pretty hard, the electrical tape is just a backup seal

The bottle won't leak to any appreciable extent. Any leaks will be due to your valve in the cap - do a good job on that and you're set.

it'd probaly be lighter too...

Having done this, I can say that the tank will feel decidedly weird. It's hard as a rock, but feather light. You almost want to use it as a hammer, but it's so light it doesn't do anything.

+1 for the soda bottle

Use a 1-liter soda bottle instead, just put a fitting in the cap. Those things will hold a lot of pressure.
