Has anyone been able to use UDP or TCP succesfully using ESP32 Thing boards using the ESP-IDF?

I've been attempting to use the ESP-IDF to program a pair of Sparkfun ESP32 Thing boards to transmit data using between each other (see https://hackaday.io/project/20473/log/70857-issues-with-sparkfun-esp32-thing and https://esp32.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=3718&sid=65fda837d8510ec196578f1ccb7963fd) for details. The Sparkfun boards use a 26 MHz crystal vs. a 40 MHz crystal that most other ESP32 devices use. I've done a lot of forum searching and contacted Sparkfun Tech support, but to no avail.
Anyone else having problems with the Sparkfun ESP32 Thing boards?
