At least you can buy a good shovel.

This is stupid as it is based on wrong perception on multiple levels.
First you do count making computers work as IT stuff but don't count every time you look on your phone or read hackaday.io or use stuff that is computer controlled like the power grid or a traffic light. If you would count every minute a computer is doing stuff for you the ratio would be very different. Even if you are an IT guy doing nothing more than fixing computer problems.
Also it is not that clear if the computers are more like a shovel or more like a patch of ground. The later also requires a surprisingly amount of work although it might has been worked over hundreds of times.
Also shovels are simple tools - as are keyboards. And they both just work fine.

This quote is from times when computers were pretty much only found in IT departments.
I don't see a reason why computers shouldn't be simple tools.

Applies to other areas too. 90% of the projects in the hobby machining magazines are using the machine tools to make more tooling for the machine tools.
