Being able to change the layer of an imported bitmap was the best discovery I've made with kicad. I can import on silkscreen and change layers after it is a .kicad_mod file by opening the file in a text editor searching and replacing all the F.SilkS with whatever layer you want it on say B.Cu for back copper. Very useful.
