It's been this way for a long time. Here's the workaround:
first, it won't work at all if you start with no text at all. You need to have something already in your log entry. Then, you can enter an equation. The equation ends up at the beginning of the log, not where you entered it. I usually go into HTML mode and just cut and paste the resulting image link to where I want it.
BTW, if you already know LaTeX equations, don't bother with the editor, you can enter the latex directly in the HTML view much easier like this:
<img src="/api/latex?tex=\color{White}\frac{1}{2}">
EDIT: if you enter the code directly, remember to URI escape special characters (e.g. "+" becomes %2B):
<img src="/api/latex?tex=\color{White}e^{j\theta}=\cos{\theta}%2Bj\sin{\theta}">
