Been giving this a little thought… I realise people will point out the cost of a WS2812 or APA102 is much cheaper than what I can DIY, but there are times these don't suit the use case (e.g. maybe you just want an indicator LED and not a disco light), or maybe it'd be handy to be able to add features to them: shift the smarts from the master to the LED controller itself.
Sadly, I can't post images to the stack, otherwise I'd have posted the lot here instead of on my blog. The ATTiny202s look interesting, and may be a promising option for use as a LED controller.
This might be a future entry in the Square Inch contest.
