If you only plan to have a micro on the 5V rail how are you planning on dissipating 1A?!?! I would expect it to only really need tens of or a low few hundred mA max in which case a linear will work just fine at such low power. Now if you have something else on 5V that does pull considerable current then yes a smps would be wise.

I am a PCB designer, but I am just getting in touch with this, so I have a problem to trouble everyone to help me see:
Im designing a simple PCB with an ATmega328P to switch some fans on and off through a MOSFET.I need 5v for the IC and 12V for the fans, not huge power from rough calculations about 1A on the 12V side and roughly 1A on the 5V side.
I was planning on using a 12V SMPS into a 7805, and tapping off the 12V incoming but I've been told that's not a good idea as it will get too hot.What are my other options? Hoping to keep this as compact as possible.
The problem with the 78 series voltage regulator it is a linear regulator so although the power lines will remain comparatively stable the regulator burn of the rest of the voltage so in your case 7 volts in heat. so using energy/s (W) = Voltage * Current (A)
1A * 7 Volts = 7 watts in heat will need to be dissipated from the device or the 7805 will burnout.
One of the best ways to avoid this is to use either a switching regulator or solid state DC/DC converter.
