Joind.In: TBA

Hackaday: TBA

NOTE: All info posted here is TBD. We will have the final version a week before the event.

We had three conflicting themes for this upcoming meeting. On one hand, it’s Octoberfest and a lot of hackers love beer. On the other hand, it’s Hacktoberfest and a lot of hackers love improving code. Then you add in Halloween where we get to dress as a Prostitute Apple Newton and act like an ass-hat. So we decided…why not all three?

Please join us for a stuffed to the brim meet up with activities such as drinking our first ever DEFCON 201 Homebrew beer, doing git pulls for FREE T-Shirts, work on your Halloween outfit and more!

About our meet-up location WHEALTH & CO. CAFE in Jersey City:

Outside of WHEALTH & CO. Cafe in Journal Square
Interior of WHEALTH & CO. Cafe in Journal Square

Centered right at the heart of the Journal Square PATH STATION with mobile accessibility, coffee and food, inside and outside areas and a passion for the hacker community we invite everyone to join us in welcoming our new venue and house breaking it in (but not breaking the house). BONUS, our venue is allowing us to BYOB so continue that tradition!

Again, if you like to do a talk at our meet ups our collaborate with our staff and members in a project partnership shoot us a email at:

$brew Open Source Beer — A Study of Large Scale Projects

:..>In Spring 2018, Firefox’s parent company Mozilla partnered with Portland, Oregon’s premier brewery, Widmer Brothers to make a beer. Widmer Brothers developed a recipe for called Open Sourcery, a 7 percent ABV, 70 IBU tropical IPA. And it’s completely open source on GitHub. DEFCON 201 took on this challenge and we brewed it ourselves with our own twist. This talk will go over how to brew your own beer, the triumphs and disasters of the process, how we created our own spin on it and how you can apply what we learned to your own project, alcohol related or not. After the presentation, participants of legal drinking age (21+) will be able to sample and enjoy the result of our literal homebrew.

:..>Hacktober fest in upon us! Join the DEFCON 201 Founders as they explain what Hacktoberfest is and how to participate. We will also open up the floor for show and tell for any open source coding projects you want to show off!

Hacktoberfest 2018 with DEFCON 201

:..>What’s Hacktoberfest?

Hacktoberfest — brought to you by DigitalOcean and GitHub — is a month-long celebration of open source software. Maintainers are invited to guide would-be contributors towards issues that will help move the project forward, and contributors get the opportunity to give back to both projects they like, and ones they’ve just discovered. No contribution is too small — bug fixes and documentation updates are valid ways of participating.

Can’t make it to this event? Hacktoberfest is virtual and open to participants from around the globe. Sign up to participate today.

Rules and Prizes

First sign up on the Hacktoberfest site. If you open up four pull requests between October 1 and October 31, you’ll win a free, limited edition Hacktoberfest T-shirt. (Pull requests do not have to be merged and accepted; as long as they’ve been opened between the very start of October 1 and the very end of October 31, they count towards a free T-shirt.)

Connect with other Hacktoberfest participants (Hacktobefestants?) by using the hashtag, #Hacktoberfest, on your social media platform of choice.

:..>What To Bring: A portable computer (preferably a laptop) that has a compiler dev environment (such as Notepad++, VIM, Eclipse, Visual Studio Code, Emacs, ect.) Many of the projects are done in a Linux desktop environment.

You also need to have a GitHub account and a web browser to interface with it. We will give you direct access to our GitHub when you arrive.

Halloween Costume Craftathon

:..>It’s the best part of Autumn again where we dress up like morons, get candy and (the adults) drink. We welcome to make your upcoming Halloween even more spooky by working on our costumes. Paper masks, cloaks, props lets all work on them together. A mix of cosplayers (Bios coming soon) are planning to be there to walk you through everything from make up, sewing and more!

:..>What To Bring: Bring anything about your Halloween Costume you are currently working on.

DEFCON 201 VIDEO FILMING

:..>DEFCON 201 will expand into video media in late September. We will be launching various videos including an Introduction, Member Spotlights, Archived Lightning Talks, Tutorials, Directions and more on the DTube, Vimeo and YouTube Mirror platforms. We will also have downloadable copies on the DEFCON 201 NextCloud of select media for DEFCON 201 Members who want hard copies of videos. If you want to be in the Introduction, Member Spotlights or Archive Lighting Talks you can inquire into us about signing our DEFCON 201 Consent Forums and we will walk you through the process. Those who have not signed our DEFCON 201 Consent Forums during meetings will NOT be recorded in Video or Audio as per our policy. Furthermore, any instances of media recording photo/video/audio via DEFCON 201 Staff will be alerted to all president attendees beforehand prior to recording.
