What about a hackaday mastodon instance?
Matias N. wrote 04/23/2019 at 02:01 • -1 pointIt would be really interesting if there was an official hackaday mastodon instance, where users could post project updates or discuss ideas. Maybe it could even use the hackaday.io user base directly.

I would not join such a platform, it'll just be an additional time sink to me. Unless there is some sort of integration or cross flow of posts, it might have the effect of partitioning the audience rather than increasing it. More maintenance work too for the admins. Then there'll the possibility of more spam; there are enough spammers and spruikers on HaD as it is.

Defcon recently launched a Mastodon instance, might be a good rallying point for Hackaday:

I think dancing on every party is a really bad idea. Better keep information together as much as possible and if something besides HAD.IO is needed, a DVCS (fossil, git, hg, ...) should be the 1st choice for replicatable sources, text, wikis, and whatsoever more. Everyone's clones of these repositories would even guarantee the survival of the information if the hosting platform dies.

Hahah, the HAD.io link threw me off for a second before I realized you were abbreviating Hackaday.

Isn't the point of federation to *not* have official centralized instances?

No, the point is to be able to freely interact between instances. To take the walls between the gardens down.
