Spray on clear acrylic coating to protect a PCB

I'm thinking of making a project with retro THT ICs and LEDs on a PCB for friends and mounting it unadorned—it's meant to look geeky—in a photo frame like this. (Buttons are on the PCB, power is supplied by micro USB cable from a phone charger.)


However I understand that some recipients might have reservations about exposed metal, even though the voltage might be harmless. So I'm thinking of spraying the PCB with acrylic coating from a product like this:

and covering the LEDs, switches and connector with masking tape before spraying.

Has anybody done anything similar and has comments to offer?
