Spray on clear acrylic coating to protect a PCB
Ken Yap wrote 07/13/2019 at 10:31 • 1 pointI'm thinking of making a project with retro THT ICs and LEDs on a PCB for friends and mounting it unadorned—it's meant to look geeky—in a photo frame like this. (Buttons are on the PCB, power is supplied by micro USB cable from a phone charger.)
However I understand that some recipients might have reservations about exposed metal, even though the voltage might be harmless. So I'm thinking of spraying the PCB with acrylic coating from a product like this:
https://www.bunnings.com.au/dulux-duramax-325g-gloss-clear-spray-paint_p1400718 or
https://www.supercheapauto.com.au/p/sca-sca-acrylic-aerosol-paint---clear-400g/288522.html,
and covering the LEDs, switches and connector with masking tape before spraying.
Has anybody done anything similar and has comments to offer?

I have attempted to cover arrays of leds and it's a pain. Conformal coating is thick and your masking gets stuck under it. I recommend you search for a conformal coating intended to go over leds with no masking.

Ah thanks it's good to have a name for searches. Now to see if I can find something at an acceptable price.

I've used clear nail varnish for small projects.
Mostly to prevent people from touching the leaded solder.

What you're talking about is called a conformal coating, if you'd like to read more about it.
