eBox 3300/3310

I'm off on holiday for a week in a few hours, but when I get back I'm going to be playing with these:

One was given to me without a power supply by a friend of mine, and it took a few hours disassembly and googling to find out what it actually was; the ebox 3310. It had been running machinery software in a factory. Perfect for a lightweight Linux and running some python applications.

While looking for the wierd 3 pin connector it uses for power I stumbled across a 3300 on eBay, new, going for £15. I had to buy it ha ha!

Now it is here , it turns out to be a -H model with suppprts a 2.5 inch drive. Ideal!

I was going to look into perhaps sticking a Pi in my son's room and adding some basic automation stuff, but I'm tempted to use one of these.

My first thought on looking at the picture was: Intel NUC lookalike. However unlike the NUC, the RAM is onboard and limited to 512MB, which means you can only put a lightweight Linux distro on it. Still at £15 can't complain. If you are thinking along the lines of a RPi workalike, then perhaps the Raspberry Pi desktop distro might suit you: https://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/raspberry-pi-desktop/

It has the advantage of having similar libraries to the RPi and Arduino, like WiringPi.

You've read my mind matey :)

I've used the Pi x86 software on a few really old laptops and it's worked great, so was going to look at using this first. I'd be using these for very lightweight tasks and in a completely headless capacity so it should be fine.

For the bedroom automation project I'm tempted to pair the 3310 with am Arduino Mega and communicate using one of the rs-232 ports.

Or if you just need a heap of GPIO ports get one of those USB to GPIO adaptors. I've written about them in a previous comment to another project. I don't know if there's an easy way to search for all my posts on HAD.

Hopefully the Buster edition of Pi desktop will be out when you get back.

that's a great shout on the gpio adaptor matey. In fact I am sure I have two Ryantek usb-gpio boards I could use :)
