Surveying makers - help a grad student out!
Tim Richmond wrote 11/06/2019 at 00:12 • 0 pointsHey y'all, I'm a grad student surveying the maker community to learn more about:
- How active are makers (i.e. how many projects are they attempting / completing)?
- What are they building?
- How are they building it (i.e. from scratch or pre-bought components)?
- And so on!
The survey should take < 2 min and is only 6 questions. I appreciate any help y'all can provide and will make sure to return the favor by posting the results after I tabulate all the responses.
If you're up for it - you can find the survey here. Thanks in advance!

Hey y'all, just following up on my original post. Here are the full results from the survey.
For those who want the bullet points as opposed to the raw data:
- Makers surveyed attempted ~9 projects over the past year
- On average these makers completed 58.3% of those attempted projects
- Once completed, the top three things makers do with their projects are:
- Keep them as is (40 / 47 responses)
- Iterate on them (23 / 47 responses)
- Gift them (17 / 47 responses)
- Even after completing a project, 72.3% of makers would attempt the same project again
- And here's where the components for these projects coming from:
- Bought a la carte (37 / 47 responses)
- Already had at home (32 / 47 responses)
- 3D printing (26 / 47 responses)
- Prepackaged kit (6 / 47 responses)
I also asked a question on the specific projects attempted. Although there wasn't anything quantitative to share - I am blown away by the breadth of projects. Definitely check it out in the full results (also linked above)!

I'll need a little more background... Why? What is your goal? What are your motivations? Where are you studying? what are you trying to prove/disprove? Are you interested in one type of demographics or another? is this academic or commercial? Who owns the survey data? Will the survey results be public or private?
aaaand what is in it for the survey taker? What would be their motivation? how would a prospective survey taker know they are in the target demographic for your survey?
Assume NOTHING.

I'm doing research into the maker niche for a marketing class. I'm more or less approximating that I'm reaching the right market by posting on specific channels / forums where makers are high in concentration.
In fact, just posted the raw data / results (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Z087J62RyhjqLIMlQ-KMTN88zugEv8g14tvRvXo2HWU/edit?usp=sharing) if you want to check it out.
