Competitors to Dynamixel XL-320? Like RC servo but 2 way digital coms
James Newton wrote 12/04/2019 at 02:32 • 1 pointWhat servo out there
- is near an RC servo form factor e.g. about 1 or 2 inches in physical size. (the current servo is 1"x1.4"x0.7" ) with a shaft takeoff
- has a digital interface that can BOTH
- accept command to move with a specific torque / drive strength / PID P, to a desired goal position.
- return the torque / load the shaft is experiencing along with the current actual position
- quality: Metal gears, etc...
We are currently using Dynamixel XL-320's and they are just frekn weird. Strange protocol, buggy, lacking support, break easy.

Hi there !
For my hexapod I'm using DRS - 0101 HerkuleX Smart Servo. They are fantastic ! I'm using them since few years now and never had any issues...

Thanks. I've looked into them and they seem smarter than the Dynamixels, but more expensive. Still no metal gears, etc... but may be the plastic is stronger?

I don't understand why they put the CRC before the data... but whatever... memory is cheap.

Yes, they are slightly more expensive but completely worth it ! Between metal or plastic gears, well you can have endless discussions... but it depends on the use of your servos... are they gonna be under a lot of stress ? back-driven ? impact ?
Generally, you break the gears when they are back-driven, either manually or after a chock but on normal operation, most likely not. If they do, they are under-sized ;)
On my hexapod I have the DRS-0101 with plastic gears, and after 5 years of use, I had no problem at all. No more backlash than before, no sign of wear either...
What I can tell you is that for the price, the performance and reliability are outstanding.
