What to use Bluetooth LE keyfob like device.
brunocalabria92 wrote 04/23/2015 at 18:32 • 3 pointsI want to create a small device (watch battery powered) that can be paired/detected with a Pi (with BT dongle) and used to identify the presence of a pet.
Would anyone have a good recommendation on what BLE module I could use? Or just some guidance on accomplishing this?

Depends on the range you want/need. For close distance (a few inches up to a foot or so), an RFID solution might be a simpler solution and it doesn't need a battery (look at 125Khz for simple and shorter, or 13.56mhz for a little more range, esp with an external antenna) .
One small bluetooth with battery component is the LightBlue Bean (https://punchthrough.com/bean/). Another tiny solution potential is the Mbienlab MetaWear (https://www.mbientlab.com/metawear/) line. The new MetaWear C model has a coin cell and bluetooth, and their original MetaWear R model has a lipo battery.

Take a look at this project: https://hackaday.io/project/4510-open-source-sport-watch/discussion-23012 The guy here is uploading his own firmware into the stock watch (pebble alike). Maybe you can reuse the same and just concentrate on firmware and your application. This watch has nrf51822 cpu inside and this seems to be quite a good chip for that task.
