For over three years we have been planing running our own Wargames and CTF to help people develop their hacking skills. While progress is still being made (we plan to launch our own in Fall 2022), DCG 201 will also occasionally enter into various online CTF Tournaments to test our skills and to get a sample on how one is set up so we have a blueprint in creating our own.
On Friday, February 11th, 8:00 PM EST to Saturday, February 12th, 8:00 PM EST, we invite all DCG 201 Members, Attendees and Fans to use train a different part of their hacker brain by joining our Team to try the experimental Decompetition v2.0 CTF!

Calling all reverse engineers! Test your reversing skills against the systems languages of the twenty-first century: C, C++, Go, Rust, and Swift. Given only a binary, can you recreate the original source code?
Your candidate source code will be compiled, and the resulting binary will be tested and disassembled. The majority of your score will come from the intersection over union of your disassembly versus the target disassembly. How close can you get to a perfect reconstruction?
The Details
Playing
Anyone with an internet connection and a web browser can play. Access to a reverse engineering program is recommended but not required.
This is a team competition. There’s no team size limit.
Scoring
Your candidate source code will be compiled, and the resulting binary will be tested and disassembled. Your score on any challenge is made up of:
- 20>#/strong### unit tests. Pass (hidden) test cases to get these points.
- 60>#/strong### binary diff. Match the target disassembly to get these points.
- 20>#/strong### perfect match. Bonus points for a perfect binary match.
The test case points and the binary diff points can be partial — you’ll get more and more points as you improve your source code — but the final 20% bonus for a perfect match is all-or-nothing.
Prizes
The top three teams will win themselves some Amazon gift cards. In the case of a tie, the team that achieved the high score first wins. All prizes are in USD:
- $500 for first place.
- $300 for second place.
- $200 for third place.
Disclaimer
Decompetition is part of a research project on the process of reverse engineering. Our research is mainly exploratory:
- We’re interested in following the full reversing process, to see how reversers work as they go from nothing to fully equivalent source code.
- We’re interested to see how a fast compile-disassemble-diff feedback loop affects the ease and confidence of reversing.
We’ll record your source code submissions so we can follow the reversing process. So don’t upload any private information in your source. Not that you were going to do that, right?
RULES:
To ensure that all players have a safe and fun experience during this event, certain rules must be followed. Please follow the rules listed below. If you have any questions, please contact the staff in Discord or email us at info@cyberhacktics.com
- Players MUST NOT attempt to hack or manipulate off-limits devices and resources. The following are...

Welcome to the December 2021 DCG 201 Meet Up!
UPDATE: Due to the spike on Omnicron, we are unfortunately canceling our In-Person part of the meet up. We apologize for the inconvenience. We will be LIVE Streaming at 7pm EST!
It’s here. We FINALLY did it! We are at the final stretch of what was 2021. To who ever thought everything was going to return to normal (what ever the heck that means)…sorry? Man it’s been a wild ride, but we like to think we are ending this year a little better than we did last year.
So after some frustrations for the past couple of months of getting a hybrid style of meet-up off the ground, join us for some cozy shenanigans at our old haunt!
Get some awesome food at SubCulture, play games with us, build us a cardboard VR contraption, learn lockpicking, hack some Retro computers and who knows? Maybe you will even find Jesus in your code.
But we only have one question…
Can you make it dance?
Extended until January 29th, we will be LIVE Streaming sections of this meet up (and other LIVE Stream shows) for the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals such as Children’s Specialized Hospital under Child’s Play!
https://tiltify.com/@defcon201live/dcg-201-childrens-miracle-network-hospitals-fundraiser

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: DCG 201 Public Apology & Operations Moving Forward

Medium Blog: https://defcon201.medium.com/important-announcement-dcg-201-public-apology-operations-moving-forward-2c84a10a660d
Greetings!
This is Sidepocket, Co-Founder of DEFCON 201 aka DCG 201 as we are formally called.
This is not an April Fool’s joke; the timing is full of irony but you will not hear us retract this.
You know us to be blunt, as we are in New Jersey, so let us get to the point.
You may have noticed that on our social media, we have been very vocal about multiple issues involving hacking and digital rights. The most recent one is our various members’ disagreement with the FSF’s (Free Software Foundation) decision to re-institute RMS (Richard Stallman) onto the board without any transparency, and the fallout from that.
Recently, we made a post on our Twitter account that called out Eli The Computer guy, a tech YouTuber, for his views. We made a post attempting to let it be known that our organization does not want to be associated with any partnership or event going forward that involves this individual. We sadly did not properly convey that message. The message was crass, inflammatory and caused more problems than it solved.
We made a mistake. We’re sorry.
My primary role in DCG 201 is to two-fold, and one of those roles is to be in charge of — and responsible for — the PR. We made a huge blunder on our social media, so we wanted to make these points clear:
1) As the primary hacker in charge of the PR for DCG 201, I do apologize for the crassness of the Tweet to Mr. Eli and those who read it. I may disagree with people on many points, both personally and along with our group, but as the social media representative for DCG 201, we should have not used the language that we used, and we apologize for that. I apologize for that.
2) This apology is aimed towards our DCG 201 Members and our fans, both locally and on social media. We know how much you love our content and our hacks, and we love you for it too. ❤ And I — as does the rest of DCG 201 — believe that you deserve BETTER, especially with regards to the quality control on our social media presence, and that of the posts we have done over the years.
3) It’s the hacker way to learn and improve. We recently have made a post on our social media to form a positive way of expressing our/your frustration and anger over the issues. We want to continue this thread by being constructive, not attacking, for all future posts and content. Punching up, not down, and supporting our stance with guided opinions, not crass declarations and reactionary, inflammatory or bait-ridden shitposts.
4) We apologize to DEF CON and all other DCGs (DEF CON Groups) who had suffered due to our words and actions. Even though we are not part of core DEF CON — and we continue to remind people of that fact — at the end of the day, DEF CON has graciously allowed us to continue to use part of their namesake in our operations. (It’s the primary reason why we are not completely copyleft with our branding.) We feel we let DEF CON and DEFCON Groups down because of our past inflammatory posts. We have learned, we will do better.
To reiterate: it is part of the hacker way to learn from mistakes, analyze the problem, and then build steps to rectify the issue. The first step to solving the problem is to acknowledge that there is a problem. This is us acknowledging that problem. We have seen, firsthand in many cases — orgs that lack transparency, lack accountability, and try to treat bugs as features. We are not, and will not be, that type of organization. Yes, our members do critique the current hacker events and news, and having constructive criticism goes a long way — but there are better ways of doing it, and we want to do those better ways going forward.
One of the ways we are going to prove we are moving forward is that I, Co-Founder of DCG 201, am stepping...

Welcome to the January 2021 DEFCON 201 Meet Up!
So uh…normally we summarize what has been going on so far this month in the lead up to our meet up but…do we even have to? Have you been online? Have you seen the news? Where were you when domestic terrorist try to hijack the country to keep a celebrity politician in power? Have you seen the rising COVID-19 death toll? Did you get your dick stolen by IoT devices?
We are sadly past the 7-day trial for 2021 and are unable to get a refund so…fuck it!
Today’s meet up like most of 2021 will be some short-formed but packed to the buffer with hacker AF talks leading to an open forum on Big Blue Button so all you 0days and packets can chat with us!
Plus, this will be the first time we will be LIVE Streaming to PeerTube via Diode.Zone for those who want a decentralized, advertisement-less open source non DMCA riddled indie platform to watch the New Jersey madness!

Don’t Be a Sucker is a short film produced by the United States Department of War released in 1943, and adapted as a slightly shorter version in 1947. It has anti-racist and anti-fascist themes, and was made to educate viewers about prejudice and discrimination. An American Freemason who has been listening to a racist and bigoted rabble-rouser, who is preaching hate speech against ethnic and religious minorities and immigrants, is warned off by a naturalized Hungarian immigrant, possibly a Holocaust survivor or escapee, who explains to him how such rhetoric and demagoguery allowed the Nazis to rise to power in Weimar Germany, and warns Americans not to fall for similar demagoguery propagated by American racists and bigots.

The game takes place in a space-themed setting, in which players each take on one of two roles, most being Crewmates, and a predetermined number being Impostors. The goal of the Crewmates is to identify the Impostors, eliminate them, and complete tasks around the map; the Impostors’ goal is to covertly sabotage and kill the Crewmates before they complete all of their tasks. Players suspected to be Impostors may be eliminated via a plurality vote, which any player may initiate by calling an emergency meeting (except during a crisis) or reporting a dead body. Crewmates win if all Impostors are eliminated or all tasks are completed whereas Impostors win if there is an equal number of Impostors and Crewmates, or if a critical sabotage goes unresolved.
Since 2003, we’ve set up and organized Child’s Play, a game industry charity dedicated to improving the lives of children with toys and games in our network of over 220 facilities worldwide, including hospitals and domestic abuse shelters. Over the years, you as a community have answered the call and come together to raise millions of dollars.
Child’s Play works in two ways. With the help of hospital staff, we set up gift wish lists full of video games, toys, books, and other fun stuff for kids. By clicking on a hospital location on our map, you can view that hospital’s wish list and send a gift.
Child’s Play also receives cash...

::DEFCON 201 — CODE OF CONDUCT::
Welcome to the November 2020 DEFCON 201 Meet Up!
After a nail biting USA 2020 Election, we have seemed to tilt the scale back to some degree of normalcy. We are glad to evict the cartoonish-level of tyrany out of the White House in the most North East Coast way possible.
However, let’s not forget what “normalcy” is. Normal was still the subjugation of the US populous. Normal was telling you it’s not your right to own the stuff that you own. Normalcy was censoring others while spreading proproganda like wildfire. Normal was installing backdoors, going to war, and the new normal of a plauge that is coming back to kill us in full force.
So we decided, f$#k normal, let’s be freaks!
And to get our freak on, we decided after high demand to revisit virually one of our favorite meeting subjects of all time back in 2017 when we started out. Hacking Sex. Wet ware meets hardware. Dicks, Dongles and The Internet Of Thongs.
We hope you are ready to relieve your anxiousness by allowing us to blow a load of hacker knowlage all over you in one content packed night. An orgy of data hilighting vurnerable back doors, exposed ports, short-stroking parasentric slots and how prude technologists and politicians are using our squeemish nature to sex to censor us all…and how sex workers on the front lines for digital rights are fighting back with the full force of the true hacker sprirt!
All activities, chats, talks, workshops and DC 201 insanity will be broadcasted online via our LIVE STREAMS per the new normal!

The Privacy of Online Dating & Teledildonics
:..>Many dating application use location to match you up with people in the local area, but this led to the leakage of million’s of people’s exact location. This can cause problems for LGBTQ+ people, especially in parts of the world with poor human rights records, as well as subject people to harassment and exposure. We’ll look at some of the problems we found last year, what has changed, and what you can do to protect yourself. We’ll also briefly see that these problems exist in the sphere of teledildonics...

::DEFCON 201 — CODE OF CONDUCT::
Welcome to the September 2020 DEFCON 201 Meet Up!
So we are all stuck at home because COVID-19 is the song that will never end. The West Coast is burning. The East Coast is underwater. And in the mist of all of this with a nightmare election coming up…Apple decides to hold an event showing off the overpriced closed-sourced products. Because of course they would.
That’s why we have decided to take this golden oprotunity to have a DCG 201 meeting theme we have wanted to do for a very long time: Hacking Apple. If you are one of the many people who struggle with XCode and Swift, own an iPhone that won’t have any games besides Apple Arcade, run a Mac that will cost an ARM and a leg, can’t play Fortnite or XCloud on your iOS device or someone who remembers when Newton was the shit, this is the meeting for you. Be prepared for a crazy live stream with limited in person seating watching hackers in New Jersey and all over the world throw a sledgehammer at the screen and break down Apple walled gardened.
Tim Apple will be proud. #AppleEvent
Details of the in-person meet below:
Now, there will be some ground rules here. To meet in person, we will have a hard MAX limit of 20 people, thus you MUST RSVP on EventBrite to be counted.
You MUST purchase a food or beverage item. Meeting will be outside in the outdoor pen. You MUST have a mask on at ALL TIMES when not eating. You must be 6 feet apart unless you came together in a group. We will provide sanitation measures. Anyone who is a knucklehead will be thrown into the Hudson River with the rest of Florida.
If you can’t make it or too afraid, RELAX! All activities, chats, talks, workshops and DC 201 insanity will be broadcasted online via our LIVE STREAMS per the new normal! We are so excited to finally do some actual mask-to-mask social distancing AFK and we can’t wait to see you all because we have quite the line up with something for everyone!

ONLINE: 4 IoT Systems, 4 Threat Modeling Failures
:..> The IoT is hugely diverse: home assistants, fitness trackers, medical devices, home security, kid trackers, smart TVs, industrial equipment, crypto wallets, car alarms and even sex toys. We’ve seen security and privacy failures in nearly all these systems, some trivial, some serious. In today’s IoT, security failures in these systems might seem trivial, but in 10 years, these systems will be ruling our lives.
We suspect that the developers of the products failed to predict which threats they needed to protect against. Unless security is considered during the design of these systems, they will never be truly secure.
We’ll look at 4 practical examples where lessons can be learned:
- Crypto-wallets that didn’t take into account physical access
- A telematics unit in a car that allowed us to take control of the corporate network
- An EV car charger that relied on...

::DEFCON 201 — CODE OF CONDUCT::
Welcome to the June 2020 DEFCON 201 Meet Up!
So, right when the world MIGHT just get rid of COVID-19, our “President” signed an executive order that censors the entire internet followed by mass protests against Feds being Feds and our White House using that to turn our country into a police state. Oh, and right during celebrations of LGBTQ+ people our “leadership” rolled back rights on said people mainly to target Transgender folks.
And we are barely half-way through June.
So JOIN US for the newly declaired DEFCON 201 ANTONMOUS ZONE as we celebrate Pride as it originally was, a riot! We have a great number of talks and special guests representing the LGBTQ+ community, featuring those who are hackers that identify as queer. This will also include the usual DEFCON 201 insanity of hacking, drinking, eating and being in New Jersey.
We have more updates to this event as we get closer to June 19th so watch this space!

For those catching us on Twitch, DEFCON 201 will be using Tiltify to raise funds for The Trevor Project, an American non-profit organization founded in 1998 focused on suicide prevention efforts among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning (LGBTQ) youth. The organization looks to fulfill their mission through four strategies: provide crisis counseling to LGBTQ+ young people thinking of suicide, offer supportive counseling and a sense of community to young LGBTQ+ people in order to reduce suicide, educate young people and adults who interact with young people on LGBTQ+ competent suicide prevention, and advocate for laws and policies that will reduce suicide among LGBTQ+ young people.

Welcome to the May 2020 DEFCON 201 Meet Up!
April Showers were suppose to bring in May Flowers but it seems like it just brought in more COVID-19, a Polar Vortex and Murder Horents. To continue the suck that is the year 2020, we continue to develop our live-stream platform with in addition to these monthly meetings also offering interactive weekly hacker programming for our livestreaming platforms. This month we are focusing on the May is Mental Health Awareness Month, something that has been getting DDoSed since the Coronavirus Pandemic and offering a jam packed meeting from phone phreaking, blue teaming on Wikipedia, Capture The Flag Tests and more! We also finally got our Twitter back after we were so 1337 that the platform confused us for a Федеральная служба безопасности Российской Федерации spam-bot sleeper cell. Oh, also, DEF CON is cancled!

For those catching us on Twitch, DEFCON 201 will be using Tiltify to raise funds for Fred Hutch, one of the top ten biomedical research institutions that has reacted with unprecedented speed and cooperation to curb the threat of the novel coronavirus and the disease it causes, COVID-19. They are using the coronavirus DNA crowd-sourced from scientists around the world, experts at Fred Hutch and the University of Basel in Switzerland are tracking how the virus is changing as it moves through people and countries. They’re sharing their data on their open source platform, Nextstrain.org and scientists and public health officials around the world are using it to monitor the pandemic and slow the spread of infection. This is part of our efforts as hackers to fight the devastation caused by COVID-19!

Welcome to the August 2019 DEFCON 201 Meet Up!
Hacker Summer Camp in 2019 has ended. BSides LV had an amazing first CISO line up, Black Hat USA has the most sexism a modern hacker convention can get, and DEFCON 27 absolutely rocked with new villages, lots of lost and found items, shuttle buses breaking down and raising funds for breast cancer at the first ever b00bcon.
If you survived that crazy week, come to our meeting to tell your tale and show off your swag! If you didn’t come down, this will be the calm before the storm for Fall 2019 so bring that project you have been working on since Bitcoin Cash forked (again) and work on it with fellow tech heads!
About our venue:
We welcome you to Sub Culture at 260 Newark Ave in Jersey City. Five blocks from the Grove Street Path station and right on the NJ Transit Bus Stop; enjoy Free-Wifi, affordable (meat and vegan) food, power strips, video games on Raspberry Pi and sweet times! Welcome to the a Special June 2019 DEFCON 201 Meet Up!
Hacking is incredibly gay. Very gay. Heck, the earliest hackers coded on machines who had rainbows as their logos is how gay things were even back then. So we are going to take out time a day before our usual meet up to honor and celebrate those hackers and tinkerers who just happen to be part of the LGBTQ+ community.
After we mingle and learn, we will go and party at our local club Six 26 to see if we can convert some frogs to our organization!
NOTE, we are still going to have the usual meet up the day after! A link will be posted here if you want to read details about that meet up: TBA
About our NEW venue:
We welcome you to Sub Culture at 260 Newark Ave in Jersey City. Five blocks from the Grove Street Path station and right on the NJ Transit Bus Stop; enjoy Free-Wifi, affordable (meat and vegan) food, power strips, video games on Raspberry Pi and sweet times! BLACK HAT WEBINAR — The Importance of Logs: You Won’t See What You Don’t Log
:..>As a Team, Cisco’s CX EMEAR Security Architecture team sees an awful lot of customer sites and systems where logging is either unconfigured or where it is configured in an inappropriate fashion.
In our experience, we find issues relating to this in over 50% of assessment engagements which climbs still further for engagements where we’re asked to actively deliver our incident response capabilities. It’s not often talked about but effective logging is a key control both to give the blue team visibility of the network they’re defending and to enable accurate analysis in the event of an incident. This talk will cover:
- Why logging goes wrong
- How to start to plan your logging requirements
- Case studies
- Where to go next
:..>Bio: Tim (Wadhwa-) Brown joined Cisco as part of their acquisition of Portcullis for whom he worked for almost 12 years. He is equally happy performing white box assessments with access to source code or where necessary diving into proprietary binaries and protocols using reverse engineering methodologies. Tim has contributed to a number of Cisco’s bespoke methodologies covering subjects as diverse as secure development, host hardening, risk and compliance, ERP and SCADA. In 2016–2017, Tim looked at targets as varied as Active Directory, z/OS mainframes, power stations, cars, banking middleware and enterprise SAP Landscapes. Outside of the customer driven realm of information assurance, Tim is also a prolific researcher...

Welcome to the April 2019 DEFCON 201 Meet Up!
This day, we plan to do something special and unexpected. On this day, the day of the full moon, we will detox from the digital ruckus — close our laptops, turn off the TV, and leave our phones at home (or in pocket) for a whole 24 hours. For one day, we free our inundated minds from digital distractions. Recalibrate your relationship to tech. It’s time to prepare for the imminent moon days by decluttering your mental environment.
#Moonstruck is the new day of reckoning in a distracted world.
No digital. No screens. All analog.
Welcome to the Real World.
Also, we are trying out a new venue! (Third Times the charm)

OpenBSD and You
:..>If you’ve ever used TCP/IP or vi (among many other foundational technologies), you have directly benefited from the work of *BSD, a series of Unix projects that have continued unabated since 1976. If you have used OpenSSH, LibreSSL, tmux, or sudo (among many others), you have directly benefited from the work specifically of OpenBSD, one of the current branches of BSD Unix. In this talk, we will discuss how OpenBSD fits into your daily lives, how and why it’s here to stay, some of the more well-known technical specialties of OpenBSD, and dive into some fun surprises. If you have any preconceived notions of OpenBSD, be prepared to have them smashed! (or totally reinforced, depending :) ).

Hackaday:
Welcome to No Network UPS Tools November!
Before the following week where you have to travel in awful weather to eat around intoxicated abusive relatives you really wish you weren’t related to and then the next day wait in a line that starts in Cairo for 12 hours before the MMA fights with middle-age Moms trample everyone so you can get that one SD Card from the department store…
Come down to DEFCON 201 where we will have some cool WebSec centric lightning talks, a Hacksgiving homemade potluck and planning out chaotic-good projects to launch in early 2019!

An In-Depth Look At the Domain Name System; the Yellow Pages of the Internet
:..>The Domain Name System (DNS) is the core underpinning of the Internet; it’s used to allow users to find things like google.com or Facebook. Despite being a core protocol, DNS is often poorly understood and rarely used correctly. This talk goes in-depth on the feature and design of DNS, while following up with attack vectors and security threats around the system.
:.>Bio: NCommander (@fossfirefighter) lives in New York and is a contributor to multiple free and open-source software projects, an Ubuntu core developer, and an active developer for the Hermes Center for Transparency working on the GlobaLeaks project. In his free time, he likes to travel, write, and play with radios.
Password “Alternatives”: Causing More Problems Than They Solve
:..>In Information Security you may have heard of articles on passwords by major technology writers such as Ben Dickson who write about how password systems are doomed and that new “password-less” systems will eventually replace them. This presentation examines the validity of known password-less systems (FIDO, Fingerprints, Face Unlock, PIN Number, Software Token, NFC) and why manipulation of language and the reality of the security landscape both practically and legally has usurped the validity of the term “password-less system” with snake-oil sales-pitches such as “blockchain”.

We had three conflicting themes for this upcoming meeting. On one hand, it’s Octoberfest and a lot of hackers love beer. So we decided…why not all three?
Please join us for a stuffed to the brim meet up with activities such as drinking our first ever DEFCON 201 Homebrew beer, doing git pulls for FREE T-Shirts, work on your Halloween outfit and more!

Widmer Brothers developed a recipe for called Open Sourcery, a 7 percent ABV, 70 IBU tropical IPA. And it’s completely open source on GitHub. DEFCON 201 took on this challenge and we brewed it ourselves with our own twist. This talk will go over how to brew your own beer, the triumphs and disasters of the process, how we created our own spin on it and how you can apply what we learned to your own project, alcohol related or not. After the presentation, participants of legal drinking age (21+) will be able to sample and enjoy the result of our literal homebrew.

What is a Kids Hackathon exactly?
It’s an event where we will group children together by age and skill level, and present them with a “problem” to be solved. They will be able to utilize the resources provided to them at the Zaniac site. This can be anything from a Mac computer, to a circuit board, and even a robot or 3D Printer!
At the end of the Hackathon, the kids will present their work and a winner will be selected (prize included!).
We hope to empower kids to change the world…one hack at a time.
Children will be grouped as follows:
Grades 1–3
Grades 3–5
Grades 5–8
Things To Know:
Price: $20
Pizza & Snacks will be provided!
Registration is required, space is limited!

::ABOUT DEFCON 201::
DEFCON 201 is the North New Jersey sub-chapter of DEFCON GROUPS (www.defcongroups.org) that spun from the DEFCON (www.defcon.org) convention that is the largest computer security hacker convention in the USA. We are a hardware and software hobbyist open workshop group that meets in Hoboken NJ every third Friday of the month.
Our mission is to help people learn new things, meet new people, mentor others in areas you may be strong in and provide some cohesion within the hacker culture in the general New Jersey area. We facillitate this through project collaborations, group gatherings, and group activities that will best serve our community and the world.

We still can’t believe it has been one year since we started but here we are. Isn’t aging fun?
After the success with our March 10th event, we are going FULL OUT on our One Year Anniversary. We are bringing the big 47 inch TV with video games and movies, music, food and drink (booze and non-booze, you are also welcome to bring your own), board and card games, and more! Wrapping all this up with a lightning talk and workshop that is so 1337 we can’t think of a better way to recap this milestone.
We want to thank everyone who has attend our meetings now and in the past and we are excited to see you again of our future events. To celebrate this, both during the Meet & Greet and the Open Workshop we will be in process of filming the DEFCON 201 About Us video. We will have Permission Agreements to sign for those who want to be on camera to interview and we will respect anyone’s privacy for those who do not want to be a part of this. .::AGENDA & SCHEDULE::. 7:00pm — 7:45pm Meet & Greet & DEFCON 201 One Year Anniversary Party 7:45pm — 8:00pm DEFCON 201 Year In Review and Future— Sidepocket & GI Jack 8:00pm — 9:00pm Writing a Remote Code Execution Exploit — Sean 9:00pm — 9:55pm Open Workshops + Projects & DEFCON 201 One Year Anniversary Party 9:55pm — 10:00pm END OF OFFICIAL MEET UP

DEFCON 201 Year in Review and Future
:..> Rebooted on March 17th 2017, we can’t believe we manage to survive and grow one year later. Our Co-Founders would like to go over our first year. It’s success, it’s failures, it’s improvements and where we hope to take it in 2018 and beyond. Topics will include Code of Conduct, Membership, The Circle of HOPE, DEFCON 26, upcoming special meet ups, ect. This will be a roundtable for all in attendence so your imput and critiques will be really valueable.
:.>Bios: Sidepocket is an awful human being that for some reason people listen to. A Co-Founder of DEFCON 201, an open group for hacker workshop projects in North East New Jersey, he is constantly wanting to help people to get better at whatever they want to do and learn. Writing A Remote Code Execution Exploit
:..>This will be an interactive class that goes over the basic knowledge necessary to compromise a vulnerable web server. We step through the web server code to reveal where a vulnerability exists. Then, we will write code that exploits the vulnerability and pop a shell into the web server.
The presenter will explain things at a high level as much as possible. However, this class will be geared towards an audience with programming experience, especially for the interactive portion.
The last 15 Minutes will be used for Q&A so bring a sharp tongue and the hacker mentality.

Phishing for Root (How I Got Access to Root on Your Computer With 8 Seconds of Physical Access)
:..> It is often said that if an attacker gets physical access to your computer, all bets are off. In this presentation, I show how an attacker can gain root access to a Mac or Linux computer with just 8 seconds of physical access by using an attack that spoofs the sudo password prompt and cleans up after itself.

Social Engineering: A Primer
:..>One of the biggest yet often underused tools in the hacker toolkit, Social Engineering is the art of manipulating a person using the oldest programming language in existence: Human Spoken Language. Some of the biggest hacks, heists, calamities, peace treaties and elections were made through the use of social engineering. This primer will give an introduction and in depth look to methodologies to social engineering (Recon, Body Language, Conversation Flow, Mind Games, Scams, ect) and techniques that the author has found to be the most successful.
:..>Bio: Sidepocket is an awful human being that for some reason people listen to. A Co-Founder of DEFCON 201, an open group for hacker workshop projects in North East New Jersey, he is constantly wanting to help people to get better at whatever they want to do and learn. He also has a history with NYC 2600, Radio Statler at Hackers on Planet Earth, Phone Losers of America, Museum of Urban Reclaim Spaces and The Yes Men. Find out more about DEFCON 201 at: http://www.defcon201.org
API Vulnerabilities and Blast Radius of Microservices
:..>Splitting up a monolith into microservices is now becoming a common practice in startups when they reach a certain size. While for most this may be a good choice, it does not come for free. Aside from increased observability, reliability and performance requirements, this approach brings in a number of fresh application vulnerabilities, and re-introduces some old ones. This presentation will attempt to list a few of these, their reasons, and their blast radius, including the risk of some truly impressive cascading failures.
:..>Bio: Tom Czarniecki has been a system breaker, UI developer, devops shaman, microservice architect, AWS trainer and infrastructure architect. He loves making things and breaking things and making things to break things makes him particularly happy. Currently he is the technical lead for application security at DigitalOcean. Previously he was the technical lead and founder of the engineering teams at SoundCloud NYC and before that Tom was a lead consultant at ThoughtWorks for longer than he cares to remember.
