Open Source concrete lathe

A lathe build out of concrete and of the shelf components.

Similar projects worth following
The goal is to design and build an easy reproducible lathe, which is useful for at least some basic stuff, to build a more advanced one,
and provide access for example for developing countries.

The bed needs to be stiff and is usually made out of cast iron. A more mode approach is the use of granite, because it absorbs the vibrations and thus allows more precision. Working granite is pretty difficult and not really fun, so I'm trying something which is pretty close to granite: concrete.

There are a few approaches with concrete on the internet, which was used for provisory lathes during world war I , but they are all only theoretical and consist of CAD drawings.

The ways are CNC ways, which would probably allow the modification to a CNC lathe, but this is in the backlog right now.

Something which I'm a little sceptical right now about is the headstock, which only consist of two bearing blocks.

    Hi,

I now added the ways and build the base for the carriage. It consists of two plates welded together. We almost got mad while tapping 20 holes on this alone.

All need to do, is to get the right screws for the linear bearings.

I made an error on the height of the headstock, so I added some adapting pieces below the bearings.

I will soon update a few photos.

This is just a short update, I poured the Lathe bed and I ground the surfaces a little bit, but now I have fine grind them, so they are levelled precise enough to support the CNC-Rails and the bearings.

    See you soon!

Pict.1: It looks nice, but it has to work nice.

    Pict.1: More Steel!

Hello everyone, These are photos of the first formwork version, I later modified it to optimize the form and correct a few errors I made.

The concrete is now curing, I already took of the formwork, now it is submerged in water to harden even more.

I will publish a log with the results soon!

Thank you for visiting the project.

Do you have dimensional drawings or even sketches available?

Are you sure? yes | no

Yes, and I will release them, as soon as I refined them. I cast the bed, and now I'm about to grind and scrape the surface to which the CNC Rails will get attached to. Stay tuned for more information.
