Project Pipeline

A plug and play, on the fly water meter for water conservation. Similar to the Kill a Watt meter, but for water.

Similar projects worth following
Project pipeline is similar to the kill a Watt meter, however for water consumption. The device is small and can be attached with a standard 1/2" water hose or pipe connector. The device is meant to monitor the amount of water being used over a short length of time, for instance over the course of a single shower, or to see how much water is being used while watering a garden.

Project Pipeline aims to tackle water overuse and aims to promote water conservation. The device is small and battery powered. With Project Pipeline you can monitor water usage in real time, rather than waiting for your bill to arrive. Project Pipeline allows you to lower water bills and ultimately conserve water in situations where it is necessary, such as the current California drought. The device is meant to attach to to a standard size pipeline or hose. Water usage is displayed on a small seven segment display and can be reset at the push of a button. Water usage will be displayed in Gallons, however changes could be made to adapt the device to handle the Metric system.

Use cases for the device could include:

  • Measuring the amount of water that is being used when watering a garden, as you water your garden.
  • Measuring the amount of water used in a single shower immediately, rather than waiting for your bill to come.
  • Calculating the amount of water used when brushing your teeth, in real time.
  • Calculating the amount of water used in a load of laundry, as you do a load of laundry.

At this point in the project I believe that the best thing to do is to get the prototype working to the best of its ability. I have been zapping bugs and fixing code left and right. If you have any suggestions, comments or criticisms, please post a comment on the project page.

    Thanks,

    Caleb H.
