Coin Cell Maestro

One breakout board to fit 6, 11, 16 and 20mm sized coin cells.

Sparkfun, Adafruit, et. al. offer breakout boards for various coin cell sizes, but each board can only accomodate 1 battery size. The power conscious tinkerer must test with different sized coin cells to determine the optimal runtime/battery size trade off. The Coin Cell Maestro was created to streamline this process and RULE THEM ALL.

The Coin Cell Maestro facilitates use of different sized coin cell batteries. The radial and 90 degree offset of the holes accomodates 4 different sized batteries: 6mm, 11mm, 16mm and 20mm. Please see the component list to find the corresponding clip for your sized battery.

  • 1 × Keystone-2999 for 6 mm diameter batteries
  • 1 × BK-5091 for 11 mm diameter batteries
  • 1 × Keystone-3013 for 16 mm diameter batteries

    Step 1

    Step 1: Determine your battery size and order the clip from your favorite supplier (the clip sizes are in the Components)

    Step 2: Deposit a small solder blob on the center circle; this ensures better contact with the coin cell

    Step 3: Orient the clip on the board.

    There are two possible orientations for a clip:

    • For 20 and 16 mm, orient the mouth of the clip away from the GND and VCC connections
    • For 6 and 11mm, orient the mouth of the clip away from the GND,VCC pair on the side

I only ask for two things: open source the design (which I see you are doing) and credit the concept to analog10@analog10.com in your module literature and on the PCB if there is space. Glad you can make use of it. One thing you may do is remove the copper fill surrounding the central terminal on the circle side, as that should allow the battery to make better contact with the circular pad.

There does not seem to be support for the 2430/2450 format. Next revision maybe ? :-)

I also use a bunch of CR927 ;-) Why not make/design a variable-size coin socket ?

I find out that solder does not make good long term reliable contacts for batteries as its oxide is a weak conductor.   What I usually do is to use gold plated headers pins for contacts.

Thanks for the heads up. I wonder if one of the gold plated contacts from standard female header would work here as well.

I have use all kinds of gold plated contacts e.g. edge connectors, flatten IDC contacts, header pins etc. depending on what is needed.  Find one that is generous with the gold plating (vs selective plated ones)
