While anaerobic digesters are a common technology in use all over the world, the FluxOmnivore is different for several reasons:
1) It requires no expertise or extra attention to operate, unlike DIY digesters. The process is automated with a series of sensors and controls.
2) It is designed for the gas to be constantly used to heat a hot water tank, and therefore doesn't take up extra space for gas storage like most digesters.
3) It is the first small digester to process waste at very hot "thermophilic" temperatures, allowing for more rapid throughput of waste and higher energy output per cubic foot.
4) It's made from a used hot water tank, which significantly cuts manufacturing costs. Hot water tanks that are in good condition get thrown away all the time.
5) All these factors combine to give the FluxOmnivore the lowest cost per cubic foot on the market.
Although the FLuxOmnivore could be used in a home, its best use would be at a restaurant, where there is a high volume of organic waste being produced, and a high demand for natural gas to heat water. Restaurants that grow vegetables onsite can also benefit from the fertilizer the digester produces as effluent.
