Where is the Professor?

A small office door display for students to help locate the Professor

Similar projects worth following
Being a professor, I always have scheduling issues with my students. We schedule a time to meet and then a sudden meeting call makes it impossible to inform the student of my unavailability. The idea of this project is to create a small display for my office door that will display my current location, activities and schedule to students who visit my office in my absence.
The best feature will enable me to update my status to the display remotely. It will also allow the students to take a snap or record a video message for me.

This display will be based on the following components:

- Raspberry PI or CHIP

- 7inch touch screen Display

- Communication using WiFi and GSM (For remote status update of the professor)

More details coming later....

  • 1 × Raspberry PI Can be B+, 2 or 3
  • 1 × 7" Touch Screen Display Compatible with Raspberry PI
  • 1 × GSM Module for SMS Based communication

  • Collecting the Hardware

I have a lot of hardware lying around and for this particular project I have almost all the things that I need. A 7" touch screen compatible with a Raspberry PI (from a Raspberry PI B+ and a GSM module. Took a couple of pictures to add to my log.

Here is the setup that I will be mounting on my office door. The screen is touch screen so I haven't decided whether I would be using buttons for an interface or not.

I would like to add Calendly for appointment scheduling. I like it because it talks to a lot of calendar apps seamlessly, which is convenient for working with students. It's very easy to use and sends you an email whenever a student signs up for, or changes, an appointment, which is great for avoiding last-minute surprises.

It totally automates my scheduling process!
