Simple web enable air quality sensor

This project was designed to help high school students study and monitor their air quality.

Most PM 2.5 air sensors cost thousands of dollars so most people do not have access to one. Particulate matter is a major health concern that causes thousands of premature deaths each year. Most people spend a majority of the year indoors and need a way to determine the quality of their indoor air. This is especially important in rural ares where people heat and cook with wood. The PM 2.5 levels in their homes can become very elevated without them even knowing it.

This sensor allows people to become educated about the quality of the air in their homes using a simple LED color indicator. If the air quality becomes poor they can take steps to improve the air quality by opening windows or turning on air filters.

The hopes is that these will also be able to post data to a central database to help citizens and researchers learn more about the local air quality.

Finally this project was designed to be usable in the classroom as a STEM education tool.

This project uses a particle photon and a shinyei PPD 42 air sensor to publish air quality data to dweet.io as well as use an RGB LED to indicate air quality.
