Verifone Tranz 330 Boondoggle

Documenting and messing with the Verifone Tranz 330 series credit card terminal

Similar projects worth following
Just hacking up and documenting the Verifone Tranz 330 credit card terminal.

This is a fun little device because it's divided into two boards. The "motherboard", which has a Z80 and a bunch of supporting chips and stuff, and the daughterboard, which has pretty much everything that interacts with the user: A piezo, keypad, VFD display, and magstripe reader. The two boards are connected with a 0.1" spaced header strip.

Verifone Tranz 330 card readers were pretty ubiquitous for many years, and now they're pretty easy to get inexpensively. I placed a bunch of $10 bids on eBay, and won almost every one of them.

Transcribing my notes from last time I hacked on one of these, here's the pinout for the daughterboard.
