After a comment by @K.C. Lee on the last project log I looked into digital/prebiased transistors and was able to find a PNP transistor (PDTA123ET,215 from Nexperia) that is a drop in replacement for the original PNP transistor. I no longer need external pullup resistors on the PNP transistors!  Thanks for your comment.
