Light Necklace

If you can see a trend, when I'm bored with an inordanite amount of RGB LEDs I try to find ways to dispose of them

Similar projects worth following
This was a one weekend project where I strapped together an arduino micro, adafruits neopixel, a 3.7v 2000mah cell and a boost regulator to drive a ~20 LED strip on a necklace.

Matt Pinner helped me finding the retroreflective hollow tape and the lace/leather for the neck strap. Naim B helped rescue the boost after I fried one or two with some "questionable" wiring :D. I designed and printed a small case that sits on the back of your neck to house the electronics.

Thanks for the reply, risknc. It's got the gears between the ears in motion.

It was for a Yuri's night party at the Endeavor exhibit in LA. Everyone was dressed in the space costumery so the bright blinkies were desirable. I think for an everyday sort of thing an ambient light dimming function would be quite useful.

Wow, those LEDs are soooo bright when worn as jewelry. Should be a simple software fix though... I'm sure it looks great in bright sunlight so you just need a way to dim them based on ambient light.

Of course the full-bright in a dark room could be called the "Ibiza mode". Fun project!

It's kind of like this stuff, but one continuous tube vs segemented like this. you could probably get a similar effect by combining one of these tapes with some WS2812s. http://sell.lulusoso.com/selling-leads/732411/Reflective-Tape-reflective-material-safety-accessories.html

it's a plastic retroreflective tape that mpinner found in the LA fashion district. It's a hollow tube with retroreflective paint on one side and clear plastic on the other, and I strung the LED strips inside with the LEDs facing the reflective side (the flex circuit blocking their direct emission from the clear side of the tape) This give it an awesome diffuse look and makes it work great. Then I just sewed some lace over the tape part onto a leather strap. Turned out really cool.

Could you give some more details about the diffuser tape? The contrast between it and the black lace is pleasantly striking.
