The Hobbyking range of Multistar Elite Brushless motors are powerful and lightweight.  I have paid between AU$25 and AU$75 for the Multistar Elite 5008. They do need to be modified to be integrated into the robot actuator. The shaft has been replaced with a longer one (with a hole) and the base has been reduced in size and weight.

Can you explain how you cut the base? Dremel wheel is the best tool I can think of for it, but those things are so jumpy and explode frequently, it seems unlikely to make it through the whole operation without damaging any wires.

I use a hacksaw. and hand file. I put a .5mm sheet of Al between the wires and the piece I'm cutting.

I now use the Gartt ML5010 3000KV motor now which has a small base already. It is also cheaper and in-stock.
