Volt the Robot - Modular Evolution

Our robotic test platform continues to evolve - our latest addition is to convert his neck,'hardpoints" & appendages into swappable modules.

Volt is a our mobile robotic test bed - he functions as a companion robot, entertainment droid, and as Ray advances in his robotics skills, he tests his new knowledge by adding to volt's design.

2018 brings with it many exciting new directions for our project - His neck and Arms are now modular - they may be swapped out and replaced depending on what his mission i

  • Re-thinking power and servo controllers

Admittedly, Volt is a bit of a kludge - he is a constant work-in-progress, and it is clear that his innards require some spring cleaning. We'll address his various connectors and microcontrollers when we incorporate the custom servo controller designed by Brett f from MicroRobotics.

  • Re-examining the base

Volt is a two-part robot - His base is removable, but is a bit unwieldy due to its physical demensions. We are working on a new base which comes apart.

Dad was able to remove some of the epoxy holding his other shoulder together, and I managed to remove the screws. We added a second Birdhouse clip and now he is MUCH easier to transport with his

  • Un-Intentional Arm MOD

Volt's Arm decided it preferred to be unattached on the way home from the Faire. This provided an opportunity to make that modular as well - we used a bird house clip from Amazon which did the trick. (Now we  just need to figure out a way to remove his other arm without damaging it. ;) )

  • Neck Module

We removed Volt's old neck and replaced it with a Go-Pro clip - we 3D printed a piece to fit on his neck, and tested it at the Bay Area Maker

Thanks! Volt has grown a LOT since those days - he now has multiple heads, several different servo controllers, and a few new surprises in a few months, Dad and I are still working out those kinks... :)
