3.5" floppy disk PCB lapel pin

just as the title suggests, it is lapel pin made out of a pcb with designs to look like a 3.5" floppy disk

This was my first attempt at PCB art with KiCAD.

I learned a bit of how to import SVG and PNG as well as how to switch the layer the kicad_mod file is applied to. (Edit the file in a text editor, search and replace say F.SilkS with F.Cu to switch from front silkscreen to front copper) this gets around kicad's inability to allow special shaped copper and other layers.

    instructions on how to assemble a PCB pin.

    1. Design in kicad with a place to solder a pin back to. circles of around 5 mm should be sufficient.

    2. order boards from oshpark.com

    3. receive boards one week later.

    4. apply solder to the pcb where the pinback will go

    5. place pinback in curved tweezers and apply solder

    6. with solder iron between heat both then slide the soldering iron out and press the pinback down.

Wow, this came out great! The balance of just a bit of white silk screen against the large portion of gold-plated copper is really catchy. Nice!

Will you write a bit more about how you pulled this off? I'm assuming you used the Bitmap2Component tool in KiCad?

it was freehand polygons in Kicad, crawling before walking.
