Apple, Google, device manufacturers, and even the Geek community, work together to terrify users with the threat that attempts to alter and improve the functionality of their Smartphone might destroy (brick) their phone.
This threat is an effective barrier to the rights of users to re-purpose phones that the manufacturer neither maintains or supports in any way.
