Anableps Buoy, Invasive Species Alerts

Conservation X Labs Open Challenge, Water Bound Alerts for invasive species monitoring by IR camera machine vision on a buoy

Similar projects worth following
The Anableps Bouy is a self contained drop in monitoring system with IR machine vision cameras, high resolution video cameras and wireless long range communications for real time monitoring missions of invasive species. Long range communications can be a range of satellite or cellular radio depending on location of the buoy.

Ideal communication is Cellular, however in developing countries where this is not possible, we would have a mesh style repeater system going from one buoy to another until it is close enough to land where a base station could transmit or relay the information via internet.

One Goal I would like to see if modular load outs. So we can have a larger camera unit for an area we have great high speed internet, and a load out for collecting samples through syringes at designated intervals based on the time of day.

This picture displayed is generic and we will be getting together a design soon.

i. Concept- Is the project creative, original, functional, and pushing boundaries? Does the project effectively address the selected challenge? YES!

Challenge Brief :

This challenge seeks methods for real-time monitoring of everything on or below the
water with surveillance technology and data analytics designed for affordability and
autonomy within the developing and developed world.

ii. Design- Is there a depth of design detail available (like a system design, CAD models, project test methods, etc.)? Is there base-level planning for the functionality (e.g., functional block diagram, list of specifications and descriptions of how they will be met, etc.)? How user-friendly is the design?

NOT YET

iii. Production- Is the project realistically reproducible (taking into consideration necessary materials, skills, and production processes)? Are the manufacturing processes detailed? Are those processes realistic for scalability?

NOT YET

iv. Benchmark- How well is the project impact and viability demonstrated? Are estimated costs realistic? How well does the project improve upon other currently available solutions?

NOT YET

v. Communication- How thoroughly have the Final Round requirements been completed? How well documented is the project? How “open” is the design?

NOT YET

  • What is Anableps?

Anableps is a fish with compounded eyes, they are know to be they are known to be the 4 eyed fish. They really still have two eyes but they are split in such a way they have a much wider range of view and also range of light sensitivity. This is where the project gets the name. :)

Anableps will have 5 Raspberry Pi Driven cameras that also use a kind of machine vision to match up the probability what is on the video image is an invasive species. When we get a hit the video clip is saved so that it can be uploaded next time it connects to the home base.

Connectivity. In most cases Cellular is the way to go but Wifi  mesh with repeater buoys also driven by raspberry PI board

This project will take some queues from my previous experience with raspberry pi vision and monitoring with my watchdog robotic project which I will link here and post a couple pictures

    https://hackaday.io/project/91890-watchdog-security-camera-robot

This is just  to illustrate what I am thinking for wildlife monitoring, I only got so far on this project, but I would love to revive it in the form of invasive species monitoring which is much more exiting and watching for neighborhood dogs poop in my yard.

The goal would be to fit these kinds of components into a buoy form factor that is fully solar powered.
