The goal of this project is to produce and document the design process of a near-infrared spectrometer suitable for use as an optical spectrum analyzer.

Current design direction is to have single-mode fiber input collimated onto to cross-dispersive optics (echelle grating + prism, or similar) separating orders onto a TI DMD chip and selectively toggling the mirrors to direct the signal to an InGaAs photodiode.  The DMD chip also offers the chance at a multi-function device, e.g. programmable spectral filter by toggling appropriate mirrors to capture part of the dispersed spectrum and collimating back into fiber, etc.
