Loko-the Tiniest GPS tracker with 270 days battery

Loko is the 12 gram GPS tracker with extreme battery life.

Similar projects worth following
Loko is an open source, battery operated radio-based GPS tracker. It’s a tiny, simple, useful device that sends navigation data to its receiver via peer-to-peer LoRa radio. Unlike other similar technologies, there is no ongoing subscription cost. Loko is radio communication based and doesn’t require a sim-card or monthly fee. It also works anywhere, even if there is no 2G/3G/LTE coverage. Loko is being configured to transmit navigation data to existing LoRaWAN® networks.

Loko is designed with Ultra Low Power consumption in mind which can work 30+ days on a single charge with the tiny, built-in coin cell battery. The transmitter is only 12 grams (0.42 oz) and is slightly bigger than the tip of a finger (30 mm x 23 mm).

Loko operates with 2 units: The Ground unit (receiver), and the Air unit (transmitter). The Air unit transmits navigation data to the Ground unit at a pre-configured time interval, and the Ground unit transmits the received data to a smartphone app via Bluetooth (iPhone only with this version). ?is an android version being developed, and if so, will an android version be available by the time the campaign ships? The app automatically shows the location of any Loko Air modules on a 2D map.

Example use-case for finding a lost drone

  • Attach the Loko Air module to your drone and operate as you normally would.
  • If your drone goes missing, turn on the Loko Ground Unit to search.
  • Once the Ground unit receives signal from the Air unit, the location of the Air unit will appear on the Loko smartphone app.
  • Follow the directions on the Loko app to recover your drone.

Features & Specifications

  • Works anywhere you go
  • No cellular signal or internet required
  • No monthly fees
  • Range +5km
  • Locate lost objects with pinpoint accuracy.
  • Up to 270 days battery life per charge for Air unit (battery life depends on how often the Air unit is set to transmit its location)
  • Expandable up to 30 Air units per Ground unit

what's the chip? Any chance of getting meshtastic.org running on it?

Akio Sato wrote 11/08/2021 at 12:53 point

I am not sure what it is ,  the chip is STM32L072

Samuk wrote 11/08/2021 at 13:32 point

It's a p2p LoRa mesh network, running on ESP32/ NRF52 dev boards. It has  Android/iOS apps for mapping: https://meshtastic.org/

Akio Sato wrote 11/08/2021 at 13:38 point

I see, I use Stm32L072 as MCU and LoRa-E5 (STM32WLE5JC) Module as Lora module.  MCU and Lora-E5 communicates via UART

Samuk wrote 11/11/2021 at 13:48 point

Ah I think that's too slow for Meshtastic :( If you did an NRF52 version that would work.

Akio Sato wrote 11/11/2021 at 14:46 point

NRF52 is too expensive and effected by silicon shortage, and a little bit big , not suitable for Loko
