Place the ZigZagoon down with its foot on the right spot and it'll come to life.

My idea is to embed a Qi charging receiver in the foot of a plushie. I'm trying a ZigZagoon for starters. Qi charging stations are everywhere now: I even have a desk with one built-in (see the picture).

The Qi receiver will power a low-energy bluetooth arduino, speaker, and a servo or two. Paired with a nearby computer or phone, and configured with IFTT, the ZigZagoon will growl or move to alert me to different things.

Current Status: I just got an AdaFruit "Universal Qi Wireless Receiver Module", and am going to test its output and see how well it fits into the plushie.

  • 1 × Universal Qi Wireless Receiver Module From the Adafruit website: "If you have a modern smart phone you may have noticed that it comes with built in wireless charging capability called 'Qi charging.' Qi is a trademark name for a thin and smart inductive charging system. Many large gadget companies have standardized on Qi, which means it's easy to find a charging dish and we thought it might be cool if your Arduino project can recharge itself wirelessly. Thus, we now have a Qi charging receiver module as seen here here. This is just the inductive charging Qi receiver. It will work with any Qi charger base transmitter..."

My first choice, the Zigzagoon, has a problem: the actual plushie's foot is maybe a bit too small for the Qi charging coil. So I searched for other Pokemon plushies that:

    1. have a wide base, and
    2. have appendages that can be moved a bit with servo motors.

Turns out, these are pretty hard to find, especially in a plushie. But I found that the Slugma (Pokedex) meets both criteria. It has a nice big foot and a head and some dripping fire that can be wiggled. So I ordered a plushie, which arrived today. It's much smaller than the Zigzagoon, but it's a very simple shape to work with:

This is a really interesting piece of hardware: a coil that picks up the power, and a circuit which evens it out to 5V and 500mA, I believe.

But whoops, I don't veen have a soldering iron yet, so I'm going to have to wait a few days to even see if and how it works!

:-) That can be a little tricky. Amazon does carry official Pokemon plushies.

The biggest challenge is finding one that (1) has room in its foot for the Qi receiver, and (2) has some appendages that can be moved around a bit. So Slugma's my backup - that big wide circular pod has plenty of room.
