This Featherwing uses a Feather to control an 8-bit counter. It uses 2 SN74HC191DR 4-bit up/down presettable, cascadable, counters from TI in series to generate an 8-bit counter. The Feather provides power, clock signal, direction, counting enable, and resetability.

This Featherwing is an 8-bit counter, with corresponding LEDs. It uses 2 SN74HC191DR 4-bit up/down presettable, cascadable, counters from TI in series to generate an 8-bit counter. The Feather provides power, clock signal, direction, counting enable, and resetability. The 8-bits are connected to 8 LEDs, so that you can visually see the bits counting up. The speed and direction of the counting are controlled by the Feather. You can also reset the counter to zero with the Feather. All you need to do is jumper any of the available Feather pins to the appropriate control pins, upload your code, and off you go.

This project is based off of a similar 8-bit counter I built out of components I found at my school's student-run Makerspace. That counter used a 555 timer to generate the clock signal. This project is very simple, but still fun to make.

  • KiCad Design Files and .GBRs

I have uploaded an archive of the KiCad Design files and .GBRs for this project. Please note that at the current state, the hardware has only been designed, but not built or tested. Because of this, I can not guarantee that hardware will work 100% as intended. But feel free to use these files to make your own boards/build upon them!

Because I have not built or tested this project yet, project specific software does not yet exist. Feel free to make your own though!

If anyone ends up building this, feel free to let me know, as I am interested to see how many errors/improvements can be made.

All components have been selected. Very small number, at a very cheap price. BOM is viewable here on Octopart.

Rev1 is complete! Based off of an 8-bit counter I built out of components found in my schools student-run Makerspace. This just uses the Feather to control stuff.
