Description

I've made plenty of protoboard projects, but I had never had a PCB fabbed before. After thinking about it for several years, it was time to pull the trigger. How hard could it be?

Now that it's done, I can highly recommend going the route of micro + a few inputs and outputs for your first PCB.

Details

Yeah, I made it in Fritzing. I'm going to try learning KiCad as soon as possible, but in the meantime, I'm designing more complicated boards than this one in Fritzing.

Nice... I recently made my first PCB but it was rather rudimentary! It was just a buzzer and IR receiver with wires to plug in to an arduino.

Cute! PCB routing by hand is a fascinating form of entertainment and I personally consider it as an art.

I started watching those! They've relabeled everything in KiCad since then, so it' s a bit of a slow go. I wish I could find a high-level overview that shows the basic steps. Mostly I want to understand why I can't just start dragging things to a PCB like I can in Fritzing.

@Chris Gammell has done recent videos on the latest 5.x version of kicad. I bet if you look at his "getting to blinky" series 5.0 it would help.

There are benefits in doing things in two stages, first the schematic, then the layout. You'll also understand why the concepts of symbol and footprint are separate.
