These tools can flash bootloaders and recover "bricked" atmega328p chips without having to be tied to a computer

The best way to learn the intricacies of a new system/part is to design or build your own development tools for them. I made two boards based on open source designs available from Adafuit (https://learn.adafruit.com/standalone-avr-chip-programmer?view=all) and Mighty Ohm (https://mightyohm.com/blog/2008/09/arduino-based-avr-high-voltage-programmer/).
