Pandemic Ventilator Project

Hi!

New to site, lost previous description, building medical ventilator in response to COVID19 pandemic, hopefully it will not be needed (especially by me) however I am compelled to create a working unit that can maintain the required parameters of breathing function and contamination control STAT.

I am attempting to keep it as simple as possible while maintaining the ability to modify or add features to the function on the fly. Relay logic , timers and fluid dynamics are what I am working with. As built is an adaptation of the designs to work with the actual stuff I have on hand. I will post pics and docs as I can publish them. Any feed back or helpful recommendations are welcome.

The control works, starting pneumatic circuit construction now. I will publish details as I go.

  • Pressure/Flow mangement

I have sourced a gas pressure sensing unit that can accurately measure air pressure and read down to gauge pressure ( - 1 bar) vacuum, It has two nc/no relays and an analog output for PID, with programmable operating parameters, this can be easily integrated  into my current design and control circuit and can provide a visible display, and alarm supervision. The price was very reasonable for a unit like this, but as you are all aware it doesn't take long for those expenditures to add up. Depending upon configuration I think I may be able to monitor pressure and flow direction by using two of these units at different locations in the pneumatic scheme.

    Progressing well.

  • Valve spec change

Started with 1/4 " aluminum body solenoid valves, primary side of circuit they are fine, output side volume is on the low side, found some reasonably priced 1/2' plastic body valves, going to continue with testing with what I have(for control evaluation) until new valves arrive, I think the plastic valves will be better suited to wash down and decontamination , which is a primary concern. I am maintaining separation of the control and pneumatic arrangements to facilitate cleaning and servicing without exposing the control to inadvertent contamination.

  • Basic control operation

I just powered up the control. It functions as planned. Hooray!

Construction of the pneumatic segment of the unit begins today.I will assemble on a bench to confirm operation prior to final assembly in cabinet. I will provide pics and vids, once operational I will update electrical and pneumatic schemes to reflect as built revisions. Instrumentation will be the next challenge, current design utilizes gauges and timers. bi-directional airflow monitoring capability is the target, for function and monitoring.
