State of the Dash Wand

A project log for Wandy

The goal of this project is to reverse engineer the Alexa dash wand.

In normal use, the Dash Wand starts recording on button press (no wake word), and then sends the audio to amazon's server, which returns Alexa's response to the user's query. Also, the Dash Wand can be used as a barcode scanner, though this is limited, as it only adds things to your Amazon shopping cart.

There have been a few attempts to hack the wand to use it for alternative uses, but nothing really succeeded.

What I will attempt to do is dump the firmware, and search for an opening that way. This does not seem like it was done yet.

I was able to successfully dump the flash on my dash wand, if you're still interested in the project let me know the best way to send it to you

Anyone have any news on any projects related to this? Such a shame it's been abandoned by Amazon.

Isn't there some developer thing where you can make your own Alexa? Couldn't you figure out what server it's trying to call out to and redirect that to your own server or to whatever servers they use for the developers' Alexa?

Following.  I don't see any points on the motherboard to hook any ISP headers or such to - and would love to reuse this thing now that it's a doorstop.

What I was thinking to do was dump the flash chip and see if there is a way to update the firmware over the embedded web server, similar to the dash button. But I am having trouble working with the soic clips
