FreeCAD Sensor Design

A project log for The BYTE

A hands free universal interface

The entire sensor design is modeled with the open source design tool FreeCAD. Not just the 3D printed parts, but even the PCB traces, hardware and other bits.

I use a design process that I refer to as emergent design. The basic approach is to start with a minimally viable part, then rapidly iterate through rounds of prototypes making incremental improvements along the way.

Despite FreeCAD's temperamental nature, I have managed to create a fully constrained, dimension driven design for every part.

At this point the model has over 100 revisions and is nearing an optimal point.
