Modular modular case

A modular case for your modular synth. Because why not.

Similar projects worth following
I wanted to build myself an Eurorack case, but somehow failed to measure the rails I got somewhere in the trash.

I ended up having 3 pairs of rails only held together by a bunch of modules. Together with a case with a big opening, this accidentally makes it super easy to maintain and exchange modules.

So i decided, to leave it somehow unfinished, and think of an even more modular approach.

Ideas

  • Stackable cases
  • Every case has its own busboard running of a generic notebook power supply.
  • The busboards can be connected internally on the primary side.
  • This allows also for other powersupply option than Eurorack, like 9V for some effects or desktop synths.
  • The cases are connected with each other using some kind of lock.
  • The system allows combining of 1U, 3U, 4U or whatever you need.

  • 4U done

After cleaning up the code a bit (I made some stupid connection between depth and height) i designed version for 3U plus 1U Intelijel, my inputs, outputs and mixer.

Meanwhile the PCBs and for the PSU came, and after some trouble (FedEx, you know) the parts as well.

So friday evening lasercutting, saturday afternoon soldering the PSU, since saturday evening i want to show it off at our hackerspace. Sounds like a reasonable deadline, and it worked out. After finding a strong enough power supply ( our bench power supply aren't, but I found an old Dell notebook PSU), finally blinkenlichten (picture form my trip home: Make Modular Jams in Trains Great Again)

  • Mechanical prototype done

Cut the first prototype out of 4mm plywood. seems to work but it feels a bit week.

    Lessons learned:

    • don't use HP in your OpenSCAD file, because 84 HP could also be 85.23493 HP
    • aound 10cm  is bit too less space when it comes plug in cables and stuff.

    Next: design a powersupply/busboard.
